The Sims 3 Showtime Guide Essentials Tour of Starlight Shores
Collectibles
When you’re not busy practicing for your next gig, step out into nature and search Starlight Shores for a wide variety of collectibles including fish, insects, gems, metals, meteorites, and seeds.
A randomness factor is involved in collecting. Spawner locations around the town control what collectibles spawn and where. However, there is no way to determine when a particular object will spawn at a location, because these are random occurrences.
The provided maps in this section will help you locate each spawner, but you may have to return to the same location multiple times before you grab that rare insect or gem you seek.
Fish
Ocean Fish Spawners
Starlight Shores has four popular fishing spots (not including the ocean) that are perfect for a day of casting away your troubles. Reeling in a big catch and selling it to The Market Basket is a fun and rewarding way to line your pockets with Simoleons.
Sims with the Love the Outdoors trait get a big boost out of fishing, and you can plop a radio next to them to drive that mood even higher—this works for any Sim, not just those with the Loves the Outdoors trait. Fishing is a great stress-reliever too.
Showtime introduces three new Starfish, differentiated by their color and rarity: Orange (common), Purple (uncommon), and Silver (rare).
Starfish live only in saltwater and can be caught by fishing along the coast. Their favorite bait is tofu. Reference the fish spawner map to zero in on their locations and those of other fish.
On rare occasions you will reel in crates filled with random junk. Litterbugs have discarded belongings in lakes and ponds, but at least their refuse is another Sim’s treasure.
When you do manage to reel in a crate, there is a good chance it will contain a valuable item, such as World’s Brew Bubble Bath or Death Flower. If you’re really lucky, the crate will contain a magic gnome!

Insects
There are now three types of collectible insects: beetles, butterflies, and glow bugs. Insects can be sold at the science facility for cash or placed in terrariums to decorate your lot.
Sims love to have a pretty collection of insects around, so consider the environment effects before trading these finds for Simoleons.
Beetles
Watch your step! Beetles scurry around underfoot all around Starlight Shores. All beetles can be sold at the science lab.
But remember, even beetles can beautify your lot, so consider that before parting with them. Generally, the more Simoleons they’d bring in, the more they’d beautify your lot.

Butterflies & Glow Bugs
Butterflies flit around the Starlight Shores, filling the air with splashes of color. Like beetles there are many different varieties, each with a different value to the science facility or to beautify your lot.
Glow bugs are new to Showtime and appear at night at the same spawners as butterflies.

Gems
Don’t just walk by the rocks you see on the ground. Upon closer inspection your Sim will discover that some of them are actually gems. However, gems require an extra step.
You must send them away to be cut into beautiful stones, which increase their value. You must pay to have a gem cut.
To have a gem cut, use the interaction on the mailbox or the gem itself. The more cuts you have made, the more become available, and the more money you can earn from the better cuts.

Metals
Sims can collect five different kinds of precious metals: iron, silver, gold, palladium, and plutonium. However, when you pick them up, they are still in ore form.
These metals must be smelted to make them valuable—and pretty. To turn ore into ingots, just send them away in your mailbox.
When the ingot comes back, the value has improved by up to 75 percent. That’s quite a boost for the §40 smelting fee.

Meteorites
Not every rock found in Starlight Shores is from this planet. Some are meteorites that streaked down from space and crashed in the borders of this fine city.
These rocks can be worth some serious Simoleons. There are three sizes: small, large, and huge.
Meteorite Values
| Meteorite | Min. Weight | Max. Weight | Value of Min. Weight | Value of Max. Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 1 | 65 | §10 | §30 |
| Large | 100 | 1,050 | §50 | §200 |
| Huge | 50,000 | 1,001,000 | §2,000 | §4,500 |
Meteorites can be worth quite a bit of money, but there is a degree of risk involved when you analyze a meteorite to determine what it is. Sometimes the raw value of a meteorite is greater than what it’s worth once it has been identified.
For example, if analysis reveals that your meteorite is Ordinary Chondrite, the meteorite is now only worth half of its previous value. After analyzing it, there is no way to reverse the process, so you might be stuck with a less valuable space rock.
Here is a list of all the possible results of analysis and the value multipliers of such discoveries:

Seeds
A variety of seeds can also be collected during your adventures through Starlight Shores, including seeds for the brand new banana tree. You can also find seed introduced from previously installed expansion packs.
Seeds can be planted to produce a specific plant. Seeds appear at random spots scattered throughout town. Each seed is categorized by its rarity.
There are four classifications for seeds: common, uncommon, rare, and special. Study the accompanying map and chart find where different seeds spawn.
