The Sims 3 Showtime Guide Essentials Careers

DJ

Where it’s at! If your Sim wants to perform, but still wants to keep their day job, they can moonlight as a DJ. It’s a good way to have fun and supplement your income.

The Sims of Starlight Shores love busting out moves to their favorite tunes, and as a DJ you can help them get their groove on. Any Sim can become a DJ by simply interacting with one of the new DJ booths.

This is not a career, but more of a hobby you can use to earn a little extra money on the side. If you get really good, you’ll be invited to perform shows at some of the venues around town. So step behind the turntables and get this party started!

Getting Started: Two Turntables…

You don’t need to buy a DJ booth immediately. Use the DJ booths at Los Sueños Private Club and Port-A-Party Warehouse for free while you build your DJ skill.

The DJ option is tied to the new DJ booth objects. You don’t have to buy a DJ booth of your own to begin building your DJ skill. Two AmpliFly DJ booths are available in town, at the Los Sueños Private Club (near the pool table) and the Port-A-Party Warehouse (upstairs).

You can use either of these booths free of charge for as long as you like. Simply click on a DJ booth and choose the Play Track interaction to get started. Initially there are only two music genres to choose from: Dubstep and Funk.

As you play, a crowd may gather and dance around the DJ booth. During these moments one of the nearby Sims may request a different genre. Use the Change Track interaction to select the requested genre.

Successfully changing tracks within a reasonable amount of time results in positive relationship boost with the Sim who made the request.

Be ready to take requests. Changing tracks boosts your DJ skill and builds rapport with your audience.

Because the DJ skill is hidden, it’s tough to gauge how far you’ve come along in your new hobby. But the more you play, the more DJ options become unlocked.

For example, you’ll gain two new music genres (Drum N Bass and Niche) as well as the Make It Groove interaction. Make It Groove appears after you’ve changed tracks, and it allows you to perform a custom remix.

Succeeding at the Make It Groove interaction is dependent on your DJ skill. If you’ve just unlocked the interaction, there’s a strong chance you will fail, leading to the negative Failed to Groove moodlet.

But if you manage to pull it off, you’ll gain the Made It Groove! moodlet as well as a positive response from the crowd.

Gigs: Hey Mr. DJ

When gig opportunities arise, show up at the venue with your DJ booth and put on a show.

No matter how great your DJ skill is, you can never book gigs in the same way as Acrobats, Magicians, or Singers. But you’re not locked out of gigs entirely.

As your DJ expertise becomes known, there’s a chance you’ll get an opportunity requiring you to perform a gig at one of the venues in town.

But before you can complete one of these opportunities, you’ll need a DJ booth of your own. Purchase the Old School DJ Booth (§1,295) and AmpliFLY DJ Booth (§2,500) from Buy Mode and place your chosen booth somewhere on your lot, then choose the Pick Up interaction to add it to your Sim’s inventory.

Now that you have your own DJ booth, you can place it in virtually any public place and perform for tips or simply play tracks for the love of the music.

The SimTech Stage Props look perfect for DJ shows, but they do nothing to enhance the show. Using a venue’s existing stage configuration will save you some money.

When an opportunity to play at a venue arises, pack up your DJ booth and get ready to put on a show. Like most opportunities, there are no set times in which you must perform the gig. You can show up and complete the gig at any time before the opportunity expires.

Upon arrival at the venue you’re given the option to customize the stage—your DJ booth is automatically placed at the center of the stage. For DJs, stage customization has more to do with aesthetics than functionality.

There are no performance score or show reviews to worry about. You simply need to perform for a set number of hours (usually three) to fulfill the requirements of the opportunity. So if you have money to spare, feel free to add some cool Stage FX objects or props to the stage.

However, avoid placing these objects directly in front of the DJ booth, as this is where crowds like to gather and dance. Instead, keep props and objects to the background and periphery where they’re less likely to interfere with foot traffic around the booth.

As crowds gather, be ready to take requests and don’t forget the Make it Groove interaction. When you’ve played a gig for the required number of hours, the show is over and you’re paid.

Opportunity-based gigs are the best way to earn money as a DJ, but they don’t appear that often, so your Sim won’t make enough to live on. So consider using these DJ opportunities as a way to supplement your income. In other words, don’t quit your day job.
