Build/Buy Mode: Blueprints

The creative energy unleashed by Build and Buy Mode inside of The Sims 3 is incredible. With easy-to-use tools, you can create homes and buildings of every shape, size, and function. Send a castle soaring skyward. Excavate the ultimate “man cave.”

But not every player has the time or will to dig down into Build/Buy Mode and fashion entire houses out of thin air. And there is nothing wrong with that, whatsoever. That’s why there are multiple empty houses in every town, from Sunset Valley to Moonlight Falls, just waiting for a new family.

However, there is a new tool in Build/Buy Mode for players who want to create a custom house: blueprints. Blueprint Mode is a tool that allows you to effortlessly place fully furnished rooms on a lot.

To explore the blueprints, click through the sort tabs along the top of the Build/Buy Mode area. The rooms are spread across multiple, essential categories, such as kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. Within each category are several options. Some are available to all The Sims 3 players, while others use exclusive objects and decor found only in Seasons. Those are labeled with a small Seasons badge.

As you dig around in Blueprint Mode, you’ll see that several themes carry throughout. There are country home rooms, Gothic palace room, contemporary rooms, etc. In the case of Seasons, there is a set of blueprints to create an urban cabin, complete with a wooden walls and and outdoors-y motif.

When you click on a room, the blueprint appears. Every room in Blueprint Mode is fully furnished. The price you see includes all relevant furniture, and the blueprint displays where the included items will be located when you place it on your lot.

If you want to use the blueprint, select it. You may now place the blueprinted room on your lot. The blueprint snaps to the ground and you can see the physical dimensions it takes up on your lot. Move, rotate, and place the blueprint wherever you like.

At this point, you can Preview the room without splashing the cash for it. Click Preview and then the room is visualized on your lot. Cut away the walls and have a look at how the room appears in 3D, with all of the included objects. If you like it, go ahead and place it.

The great thing about blueprints is that they act as suggestions. You can happily accept the room as it appears and then switch back into Live Mode. However, you are free to use the Hand tool to move objects around, rearrange a room, and more. Don’t like all of the furniture or fixtures? Sell back to Buy Mode and replace them with something else. Want different wallpaper? Go for it. Dive into Create a Style and change the color and texture of objects until the room is precisely how you want it to look and then finalize the purchase by switching into Live Mode.

Every room in Blueprint Mode has at least one door, which is displayed on the blueprint in yellow. Use these doors as guides when you are adding blueprints to an existing house, or creating a new house out of multiple blueprinted rooms. If you place a blueprint with a door facing an area or object that is not compatible with a door, the door is refunded.

You can also use Blueprint Mode to easily add multiple stories to a house. Just click up one floor and then lay down a blueprint for a new room. The blueprint snaps to the “floor” of that level of the house. As always, you need to have support below the new room. You cannot have a room half-hanging off the edge of a house or above a great room with no support walls or pillars. In addition, blueprints do not include stairs, so you will need to add those manually in Build Mode. In some cases, you may need to rearrange objects in the new room to accommodate the stairs.
