Can You Play Co-Op Multiplayer in Devil May Cry 5?

Answering whether or not there’s co-op multiplayer available in Devil May Cry 5.

As gamers sink their teeth into Devil May Cry 5, many have found themselves wondering whether there’s a co-op multiplayer option available.

While it’s true that you switch between three different characters (Dante, Nero, and V) in the campaign itself, it’s less clear as to whether or not you can have friends join you. To help answer this question, we’ve decided to put together a quick guide.

First and foremost, it’s important to note that Devil May Cry 5 does not have co-op multiplayer option in the traditional sense. Instead, Devil May Cry 5 features a “cameo system” where players can appear in the games of other players as long as they’re connected to the internet.

In some cases, these players simply appear in the background, while in other cases these random players can actually fight alongside you. Addressing this system on Capcom Unity, Yuri Araujo explained:

“The game is primarily a single player experience, but director Itsuno-san and the team really wanted to tell an epic story with three distinct perspectives and playstyles, where the main protagonists run into each other and collaborate from time to time.

So to make that a reality, they’ve implemented a system where, while connected to the internet, players will make guest cameo appearances in each other’s games in real time, or through ghost data gameplay by slicing and dicing demons side-by-side with other players!

Again, our focus is in providing a single player experience like no other, so this cameo system also ensures the experience is always smooth as possible with no downtime.”

If you run into another player in the game, you’ll not only see them playing as a different character than you, you’ll also be able to view their username on the side of the screen underneath text that begins with, “Starring.”

When you’re not playing with another player, this text will simply read, “Starring the DMC crew.” Again, you can’t invite your friends to play with you, and there’s no way to manually matchmake with other players to ensure you have someone fighting alongside you. Instead, the cameo system utilizes randomization.

As an added benefit, when you complete a section with help from another player, you’ll be able to rate them as “Stylish” if you feel so inclined. In doing so, they’ll receive a Gold Orb as a reward. Likewise, other players can rate you after you appear in their game, so if you receive a Gold Orb out of nowhere, it likely came from another generous player.

Again, the only “co-op multiplayer” option available in Devil May Cry 5 is the cameo system. As long as you’re connected to the internet, you have the chance to either appear in another player’s game, or have another player appear in your game.

Devil May Cry 5 is now available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC.
