Where is Tyrael in Diablo 4? – Answered

Where's my favorite Archangel?

Diablo 4 features a handful of returning characters from previous games, all providing different roles in the new conquest against the demon Lilith. Take Lorath Nahr, for example, who first appeared in Diablo 3’s Reaper of Souls expansion in the fight against Malthael. Now, he serves as the Wanderer’s first true companion in Diablo 4’s story. With so many characters returning, you may be wondering what happened to everyone’s favorite Archangel. Here’s where Tyrael is in Diablo 4.

What Happened to Tyrael in Diablo 4?

Tyrael doesn’t make a physical appearance in Diablo 4’s main story or during any of its side missions. Rather, he’s mentioned here and there. The biggest mention comes from Lorath Nahr, who mentioned that he was one of the last surviving Horadrim alongside Donan, Elias, and Tyrael. One day though, Tyrael mentioned he was “afraid of something” and left, never to be seen again. Presumably, this is setting up his appearance in a later expansion, but no official word has been given there.

The other, much smaller mention of Tyrael is within the Horadric Initiate’s Amulet item, which mentions Archangel Tyrael by name but nothing more. This is likely just a nod to the previous statement about Tyrael, rather than anything concrete.

Where Are the Other Angels?

As for the rest of the angels, the reason for their missing appearance is due to the Heavens still trying to rebuild 50 years later following the events of Diablo 3. The only other angel we meet is Inarius, though this is after he was cast out of Heaven for creating Sanctuary in the first place. While this is written in the lore, the primary development reason for the other Angels not being present is due to the team wanting to ground the game, which appears to have been a smart choice.

If Tyrael appears in any of the promised expansion packs, we’ll be sure to update this article to mention him. If you’re curious about details surrounding other characters, check out our guide on who voices Lorath Nahr in Diablo 4.
