How Does Exotic Focusing Work in Destiny 2? – Answered

Spend an Ascendant Shard so Rahool can sell it back to you for 10x the price

Bungie’s been tweaking how we get Exotics for quite a few months. I’ve welcomed every change because sometimes RNG just spits in our face. The latest change is Exotic Focusing. Here’s how Exotic Focusing works in Destiny 2.

How Does Exotic Focusing Work in Destiny 2? – Answered

Exotics are, as the name implies, exotic. They’re unusual and hard to come by. But as the game’s grown, so has the number of Exotics in the pool. Which can make getting the one you want from a random drop extremely unlikely. Fortunately, Bungie has implemented Exotic Focusing, which allows you to select the expansion the Exotic comes from. Here’s how it works, with a succinct answer here and a more detailed response below.

  • Get an Exotic Engram.
  • Take it to the Cryptarch in the Tower.
  • Select Focused Decoding.
  • Then choose the Exotic you’d like to Decrypt the Exotic Engram into.

Getting an Exotic Engram can be quite difficult. Usually, when you Encounter an Exotic Engram, it automatically decrypts. But there are a few ways to get them. Certain activities will drop them as pure engrams, and you can also find them in the Season Pass.

Once you have one, speak to Rahool in the Tower. Do not decrypt it in the menu that immediately pops up. Instead, press back or “B” to get to Rahool’s main menu. Then select “Focused Decoding”.

You’ll then be given a variety of options to choose from. These are:

  • The Red War (with specific options for helmet, chest, gauntlets, and leg armor)
  • Forsaken (general armor)
  • Shadowkeep (general armor)
  • Beyond Light (general armor)
  • Witchqueen (general armor)
  • Lightfall (general armor)

The cost of doing so is:

  • 1 Exotic Engram
  • 30,000 Glimmer
  • 1 Ascendant Shard

That’s a steep price. But it’s worth it if it means you can finally grab that elusive piece, right? I should note that currently, as of May 25, there’s a known bug that causes Decrypted Exotic Engrams to roll out with stats under 60. Bungie is looking into this, and it should be resolved shortly. But until it is, it’s a good idea to wait to decrypt.

The Season of the Deep has its own assortment of Exotics worth grabbing, too. Check out how to get the showcase Exotic Auto Rifle here: How to Get the Centrifuse Exotic in Destiny 2.
