Rare is set to have an interesting weekend, as for the first time in over two decades, a new Battletoads game has been released. Microsoft has been using the Battletoads to ironically poke at Rare fans for a while now, but this is the first truly major development. Well, depending on how you felt about that one E3 statue. Anyway, the Battletoads release has been paired with some neat, free new content in Sea of Thieves, along with the Battletoads/high seas pirate music hybrid I never knew I wanted.
Sea of Thieves: Fightin’ Frogs Ship Set Guide
Today is August 20, 2020. As of this writing, you can purchase and play the new Battletoads, or just download and install it on your Xbox One or PC if you have Xbox Game Pass. If you’re a fan of arcade-style brawlers and pay for Game Pass, there’s literally no reason not to unless you’re still playing Streets of Rage 4. That’s a pretty good excuse actually, but if you check those boxes and you’re a Sea of Thieves fan, you should get off the streets for a minute and punch the crap out of some mutant rats.

That’s because, if you sign into your Xbox Live account, you can turn your Battletoads progress into a full, new Ship Set in Sea of Thieves, no additional purchase required. All you have to do is get past Battletoads’ first act. This is a full Ship Set called “Fightin’ Frogs,” meaning you get everything you need to Battletoad it up on the high seas. You get the sails, hull, flag, cannons, wheel, and capstan. That’s a whole ship, and every piece shows your allegiance to the Toads of Battle. And if that’s not enough Battletoads madness for you, there’s one more thing.
In addition to the new Ship Set, Rare’s Sea of Thieves team also released a new arrangement of the Battletoads theme, which you can check out on your music service of choice. It’s a new take on the ironically classic David Wise joint, arranged this time by Katie Tarrant. It’s a bit jarring at first to hear Wise’s jazz/metal musical syrup converted into stringy pirate singsonginess, but we’re impressed all the same.

Perhaps August 20 will go down in history as the only time it’s appropriate to be unironically excited about Battletoads.
