The folks over at Epic Games are certainly no strangers to implementing Easter Eggs into their games, though the one recently discovered within Fortnite is certainly deserving of top billing, partly because it involves Adam West’s Batman and, well, partly because it’s just a really cool reference.
The news comes by way of ComicBook, which reported that players of the massively popular battle royale title Fortnite uncovered a new achievement available within the game called “Shark Repellant” that is obtainable by dealing 1,966 damage to the loot sharks added in the latest Season update to the game. Damaging said sharks allow players to traverse the flooded map, so it’s by no means implausible to unlock the achievement. For those unfamiliar, the name of the achievement references one of the many outlandish scenes from Adam West’s celebrated run as Batman wherein the titular character pulls a bottle of Batman Shark Repellent Spray off his utility belt in the series’ 1966 movie. If that wasn’t enough, that particular part of the movie also references the original source, a Batman comic from 1958.
This is by no means the first time Batman has found his way into Fortnite. The popular Batman Fortnite crossover event that took place last year added some skins for both the Dark Knight and Catwoman, while Harley Quinn received her own skin in the game earlier this year in celebration of the release of Birds of Prey. Epic Games isn’t playing favorites, though, as plenty of other franchises have also found their way into Fortnite. Marvel has had a significant presence on the battle royale title thanks to events based on both Deadpool as well as the MCU’s Avengers: Infinity War.

Stepping away from Marvel and DC, the recently released launch trailer for Fortnite Season 3 included a reference to Mortal Kombat’s Johnny Cage and his decapitation Fatality, of all things. Still, the Adam West Batman Easter Egg found in the achievement list is undoubtedly one of the more heartfelt nods to the late actor and the iconic character that we’ve seen in quite some time. Given the subtlety of the Easter Egg, it’s quite possible that we’ll find similar references as players work their way through Fortnite’s Season 3 content.
