After unlocking skills, a common question Valheim players have is how to raise your skill level. To simplify everything, we’ve put together an overview of all skills in Valheim and included a full list of Valheim cheats and commands as well for those of you who prefer less orthodox methods.
Valheim: List of All Skills
In Valheim, there are 20 skills that you’re able to unlock. As you play the game, you’ll naturally unlock these skills and will level them up the more you use them.
Below, we’ve listed all 20 skills that you can unlock in Valheim and their effects as you level them up:
- Run: Increases run speed and decreases stamina usage while running.
- Swim: Decreases stamina usage while swimming.
- Jump: Increases jump height.
- Sneak: Reduces visibility and decreases stamina usage while sneaking.
- Fists: Increases damage and knockback dealt while unarmed, and decreases stamina usage.
- Clubs: Increases damage and knockback dealt with a club, and decreases stamina usage.
- Axes: Increases damage and knockback dealt with an axe, and decreases stamina usage.
- Wood Cutting: Increases damage against trees.
- Knives: Increases damage and knockback dealt with a knife, and decreases stamina usage.
- Blocking: Increases damage absorption while blocking.
- Bows: Increases damage and knockback dealt with bows; decreases stamina usage and draw time.
- Crossbows: Increases damage and knockback dealt with crossbows, and decreases reload time.
- Pickaxes: Increases damage and knockback dealt with a pickaxe, and decreases stamina usage.
- Spears: Increases damage and knockback dealt with a spear, and decreases stamina usage.
- Swords: Increases damage and knockback dealt with a sword, and decreases stamina usage.
- Polearms: Increases damage and knockback dealt with a polearm, and decreases stamina usage.
- Elemental Magic: Increases damage and knockback dealt with elemental magic, and decreases eitr usage.
- Blood Magic: Increases damage, knockback, and protection when using blood magic; decreased eitr usage and health usage.
- Fishing: Increases reeling speed and decreases stamina usage.
- Riding: Increases sprint speed and decreases stamina usage while riding.
To view the list of skills you’ve acquired, press Tab, then select the symbol that looks like three triangles connected together located below your username and to the left of the trophy symbol. By selecting this, your list of skills and the skill level you’re at with each will pop up.
Note that if you die in Valheim, you’ll lose 5% of your total skill level in each of the skills you’ve unlocked. As mentioned in another one of our guides, death isn’t awful in Valheim, but it’s certainly inconvenient. Yes, you can grab the items you dropped at the time of your death, and yes you can regain the 5% skill level lost by continuing to play the game, but it’s a huge pain especially if you die frequently.
Speaking of skill level, the maximum skill level in Valheim is 100. When a skill reaches level 100, it’s been maxed out. To max your skill level, you’ll need to use these skills regularly. For example, with the “Run” skill, you’ll need to run from place to place in Valheim.
As you Run, your skill level with it will increase. But if you’re impatient, you can unlock skills early and instantly increase each skill to its maximum level 100 by using cheat codes and the raiseskill command. You can do this for one skill, two skills, or all of them depending on what’s most enjoyable for you.
How to Find and Use the Valheim Console
To use cheat codes and console commands in Valheim, you’ll need to bring up Valheim’s console command box by pressing F5. To enable cheats, you’ll want to then type “devcommands.” If and when you want to turn cheats back off, retype the same command: “devcommands.”
If you’re playing on Xbox, you can bring up the console command box by holding down RB+LB+RT+LT+menu. You’ll then be able to type using the Xbox keyboard by pressing A. As on PC, you’ll need to first type “devcommands” to enable cheats. The same button prompts (RB+LB+RT+LT+menu) will close the command box for you.
Valheim: Raise Skill Command
If you’re looking to raise skills in Valheim through cheating, all you need to do is open the console command and type in the following prompt:
- raiseskill [skill] [amount]
Where it says “skill” and “amount,” type in whichever specific skill you’d like to increase and the amount you’d like increase it to. This will then raise that specific skill to the specified amount.
For example, if you wanted to raise your Swim skill level to 100, you would type raiseskill swim 100.
You can also reset skills using a similar prompt:
- resetskill [skill]
This will reset the specified skill back to zero.

How to Go Into Creative Mode in Valheim
To enter Creative Mode in Valheim, you’ll need to enter Debug Mode by typing debugmode into the console command box. While in Creative / Debug Mode, you can then do the following:
- B: Repair any item without a Workbench and craft anything for free.
- K: Kill all nearby enemies.
- Z: Toggle flying mode.
