The preseason will be a period before a season of competitive play in the high-profile title begins. This period will be used by Niantic to balance and optimize the feature. Niantic will also be seeing how the community is using the new feature during these periods to help them make decisions on important aspects of the new feature. These aspects include the likes of season length, rank rating thresholds, and more.

The Great League is where this period will start for the battle feature. It will then move on to its Ultra and Master versions. These leagues will then rotate every two weeks. Trainers will have the ability to rank up during the preseason, but it will then partially reset at the beginning of Season 1, according to Niantic. Rewards will still be earnable during the Battle League Preseason as well.

The schedule for this Pokemon GO period will begin with the Great version now and then move to the Ultra version on Monday, February 10, 2020, at 1 PM PST. It will then move to the Master version on Monday, February 24th, at 1 PM PST. A move back to the Great version will occur on Monday, March 9th, at 1 PM PST.
