With The Last of Us Remastered available worldwide, players everywhere are getting their first — or second — taste of a post-apocalyptic United States filled with Infected souls trying to eat them. Hunters, Soldiers, Clickers and Bloaters; you name them and they are out to kill Joel and Ellie as they make their way from coast-to-coast. Expect your travels to be hard, but also know that you aren’t alone. Having made this journey three times ourselves, we feel that we have a good grasp on what it takes to endure and survive. With that being said, here are a few tips to help you avoid becoming infected with Cordyceps.

I’ll Say When We’re Done Here

The Last of Us Remastered is filled with intense moments, followed by some downtime where you can relax and enjoy the scenery. They key here is to know when those intense moments end and the more chill times begin.

Pay close attention to the dialog between the characters. In almost every situation, one of them will make a comment when all of the enemies are dead in a particular area, or you’ve passed through to a safe zone. The first example of this is in Chapter 2: The Quarantine Zone, when Joel and Tess have their first encounter with the Infected. If you decide to sneak by them, she’ll let you know when you’re out of harm’s way. If you kill all three, however, she’ll make the comment, “Alright, that’s all of ’em.” This is a trend that continues in almost every situation throughout the game, so if someone hasn’t said that it’s all clear, you might want to take another look around just to be sure.

It Pays to be Thorough

Depending on the difficulty level that you choose to play on, The Last of Us Remastered might be full of loot, or there might not be much at all. It pays to check every body, nook and cranny. Sure, this will add hours of time to your play through, but it will also ensure that you’re armed to the teeth when you reach the more intense parts of the game.

The best advice we can give you is to follow our first tip, then when the coast is clear, make another pass through the area and look for supplies. Even consider turning on your flashlight just in case something is hiding in the shadows.

The Art of Crafting

Crafting is not only an essential part of being prepared for combat, it’s also a good trick to make sure you can pick up the maximum amount of supplies. This is something that we see people overlooking time and time again, and it drives us mad. Almost as mad as those pesky Infected.

Let’s say that you approach a shelf, but can’t pick up some Alcohol  because it says you’re full. That might be the case, but why not try and craft a Molotov or Health Kit, both of which require Alcohol? If you can craft one, this will open up room in your inventory and allow you to snag the item on the shelf.

You Come Here to Me

This is something that is also very much overlooked, and can be the difference between getting through a situation unheard or having to fist-fight 12 angry Hunters. By now, everyone knows how to grab someone. You simply approach them and press the Triangle button, then press Square to Strangle them, or Triangle again to Shiv them..It’s a fairly simple concept.

What people don’t know, however, is that before you start to Strangle or Shiv them, you can use the Left Stick to move them around a bit. Approach the bad guy and grab them as you normally would, but before you choose how to kill them, pull back on the Left Stick, dragging them behind cover and out of sight. If you wait too long they’ll break free, but you should have a second or two before you choose how you’ll bring about their doom.

Listen Mode and Weapon Sway

Throughout your journey, Joel will have an opportunity to pick up Supplements. As they start to accumulate he can use them to increase his Listen Mode Distance, as well as decrease Weapon Sway. While it may not seem like a big deal, these are two of the most valuable skills that you can maximize.

Listen Mode Distance will allow players to press the R1 button, causing Joel to focus his hearing to pick up on any movement around him. The further you can hear, the more threats you can detect and the better you can plan your next move. When it comes to Weapon Sway, it’s all about conserving ammunition, and that is directly related to headshots. Of course, the head is a small target, and if your crosshairs are wobbling all over the place there’s a decent chance you’re going to miss. Every bullet that misses your target is one less that you’ll have for the next life or death situation.
