Does Palworld Autosave?

Don't lose your monster-catching progress!

Like many other games, Palworld has a fairly functional save system for preserving your game progress. We’ll tell you if Palworld has autosave or not.

Does Palworld Auto-Save the Game?

Regarding the auto-save mechanic in Palworld, the game is quite generous as it will automatically save your player character and world progress every few minutes. When I was playing, it appeared as if the auto-save notification popped up in the corner every 30 seconds, but I know it was a tad bit longer than that.

In any case, you can rest easy knowing your progress is backed up and you’re not about to lose your entire party, base, or world. If you crash, you may lose a few minutes worth of gameplay, but nothing you can’t recreate in short order.

This is an Early Access release, which means the occasional bug and crash. If that happens and a save is corrupted, which is, as of yet, unheard of, then there may be nothing anyone can do.

At the moment, you cannot reload a previous save should something go wrong. Palworld’s auto-save can’t be turned off and continuously overwrites the game’s single save file.

Some players have reported a problem where Palworld will fail to auto-save and instead the message “unable to auto-save” will appear. At the moment, this bug is unfixable and will not resolve itself. If this happens to you, you’ll want to stop playing immediately after seeing the error message and reset your game without returning to the title screen. If the error message still continues to pop up, you may be forced to abandon that save file and start a new world.

How to Manually Save the Game

If you’d rather be 100% sure that your Palworld file is saved correctly and you won’t lose your progress, you can always “manually” save the game by opening the menu and selecting “Return to Title.” Yes, this method does bring you back to the main menu. However, it saves the game when you do so, allowing you to have better control over your save file to some extent.

If you’re hoping for an actual manual save, it doesn’t yet exist within the game. Unfortunately, this also means that you can’t have multiple save files for any one world.

While Palworld doesn’t offer multiple save files, you can create several different worlds simultaneously. Each new world you create will have its own separate save file, so you won’t need to worry about losing progress in one world while playing in another.

How to Back Up Your Palworld Save File

If you want even greater control over your save file, you can back it up on PC by visiting: C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\Pal\Saved\SaveGames.

Copy the save file from there and back it up elsewhere or to a thumb drive. Backing up a save file is a lot of work for an Early Access game, but if you’re genuinely attached to your Pals or your base-building progress, it’s an easy way to stay secure!

How to Fix Game Crashing After Autosave Bug in Palworld

You can try to fix the game crashing after autosave in Palworld by either moving the game to an SSD or turning multiplayer off in Palworld. Numerous players, especially those on Game Pass, have reported their games crashing after they autosave. While there is no definitive fix for this problem, you can try the suggested solutions.

To turn multiplayer off in Palworld, you’ll need to go to the world selection screen and then set the “Multiplayer” option to off. This is an inconvenient solution, especially if you want to play with friends, but it’s better than not playing at all. We cannot verify with 100% certainty that this fix will work, but try it and see if it solves your bug.

Moving the game to an SSD is also an option, as the crash could be hard drive-related. In Steam, you can do this by right-clicking the game, clicking “Properties,” then clicking Local Files and then “Move Install Folder.”

If you’re on Game Pass, there are ways to transfer your Palworld save file to Steam.
