The Shard of Agony is one of the items you need to get before summoning Duriel as an endgame boss in Diablo 4. It isn’t the most challenging task in the game, but it will take a few hundred Aberrant Cinders and some good timing in the Helltide.
Where to Get a Shard of Agony in Diablo 4
To get a Shard of Agony, you need to bring five Living Steel to the Hall of the Penitent Lair and then defeat Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint on World Tier 4. Any time you defeat him in his boss lair after offering the five Living Steel, there is a chance that a Shard of Agony will drop. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t drop the first time, though.
The first time I beat Grigoire at level 78, the only loot I got was armor. I couldn’t find any summoning drops that would help with Duriel. I had to reset the Hall of the Penitent and summon Grigoire with another five Living Steel to fight him again. In the second run of the boss fight, I found a Shard of Agony as my reward for victory.
How to Get a Shard of Agony:
- Collect at least five Living Steel.
- Bring them as an offering to the Hall of the Penitent.
- Defeat Grigoire, The Galvanic Saint.
- Collect your loot.
Grigoire himself shouldn’t be tackled for most players before level 75. He has a ton of consistent lightning damage and a room full of traps. Without decent gear on World Tier 4 and a good chunk of the Paragon board out of the way, he can easily wipe the floor of the halls with your under-leveled character.
To get the Living Steel itself, search for Tortured Gifts of Living Steel in Helltide events. These chests will cost 300 Aberrant Cinders each. It sounds like a lot, but the good news is that higher World Tiers can give you up to three Living Steel per chest.
