How to Complete An Unheard Farewell Quest in Valor Mortis

An Unheard Farewell is one of the early side quests in Valor Mortis, but finding the soldier who gives you the quest and locating his missing scouts can be confusing. The quest takes place in the Valley of Ashes during Chapter 2.
You’ll need to find the Adjutant Sous-Officier, unlock the elevator route, defeat a powerful soldier, and recover a letter before returning to complete the quest. Here’s how to finish An Unheard Farewell in Valor Mortis.
How to Start An Unheard Farewell in Valor Mortis
Starting the quest isn’t difficult, as you will end up finding the Adjutant Sous-Officier as you progress through Chapter 2. After defeating the first Grenadier, look for a wrecked military carriage near the Guidepost lantern. You will hear him talking from the carriage, so finding him is not particularly difficult.
Just interact with the carriage window to speak with him, then agree to help find his missing scouts. This will start the Unheard Farewell Quest in Valor Mortis.
How to Find the Missing Soldiers in Valor Mortis
Once you’ve accepted the quest, follow these steps to find the scouts.
1. Reach the Elevator
From the Adjutant’s carriage, follow the route down the broken bridge, jumping between the platforms until you reach the lower area. You will have to parkour across platforms and swing on ledges to go down.
Continue through the small carriage where you can pick up the Pistol. Keep going down until you reach the bottom. You will see a lantern there; rest up and get the checkpoint.
In front of you will be a lift that’s blocked. In order to clear its way, you need to shoot the glowing Nephtoglobin growth. Look towards the water, and you will see a small parkour section that you can climb up to see the glowing orb. Shoot it and then ride the elevator up.
The elevator will stop at the entrance of the cave. Use the Fire Transmutation to clear the entrance.
2. Clear the Cave and Unlock the Elevator Route
Continue through the cave and make your way outside. You’ll need to complete a short platforming section before reaching another set of glowing Nephtoglobin growths.
Destroy the two growths to fully unlock the elevator’s route. Once this is done, you can use the lift to reach the previously inaccessible parts of the shaft.
3. Find the Hidden Cave
This is where most players are having trouble. Once you have unlocked the full elevator route, you don’t actually need to go straight to the top.
Remember the first cave you went into? There is another cave just opposite that, which is first blocked by the Nephtoglobin tentacles. As the lift goes up, just jump at the entrance of the first cave, and look opposite its entrance, and you will see another cave entrance.
The entrance is blocked by a wall of golden vines or web-like material. Use your Fire Transmutation to burn through the barrier and enter the cave.
4. Defeat the Soldier and Collect the Letter
Inside the cave, you’ll encounter a powerful soldier who acts as a miniboss. He’s tougher than regular enemies, so be prepared to parry his attacks and look for openings rather than attacking recklessly.
Once you’ve defeated him, look for the letter near his body. Pick up the Letter to All Commanding Officers of the Line Infantry to learn what happened to the missing scouts.
Before leaving, open the ornate red chest nearby to collect a Pure Blade Material. You can then climb the ladder to exit the cave and continue back toward the Adjutant.
How to Complete An Unheard Farewell
After collecting the letter, return to the Adjutant Sous-Officier at the wrecked carriage near the Demolished Path lantern.
Speak to him and report what you found. You’ll be given a choice to tell the truth about the scouts or lie about what happened.
Both dialogue options allow you to complete the quest and receive the Sleight of Hand Amber, which improves firearm reload speed and weapon switching. Your answer can affect the additional outcome of the conversation, so choose based on how you want to handle the report.
Completing the quest also contributes to the Aggressive Reconnaissance achievement.
An Unheard Farewell Rewards
Here’s what you can collect while completing the quest:
- Sleight of Hand Amber: Improves firearm reload speed and weapon switching.
- Pure Blade Material: Found in the chest inside the hidden cave.
- Aggressive Reconnaissance achievement: Earned for completing the side quest.
The most important thing to remember is that the missing scouts aren’t along the main route. Once you’ve unlocked the elevator, look for the narrow ledge halfway along the shaft and jump onto it. That’s the route to the hidden cave and the soldier you’re looking for.
