Quintessential Transmutation Material is the rarest upgrade material for your Transmutations in Valor Mortis. You’ll need it to max out (Level 5)  Fire, Stasis, or Shield to unlock their final upgrades and some powerful abilities.

Unfortunately, you can’t buy this material from a merchant, and there are only two known copies available in the game. This means you can only max out two of the three transmutations in the game, making the choice difficult.

But before we get into deciding which Transmutations to max out, let’s first learn where to find every Quintessential Transmutation Material in Valor Mortis and what you’ll get for maxing out each Transmutation.

How to Get Quintessential Transmutation Material

At the time of writing, there are two known Quintessential Transmutation Materials in Valor Mortis. One is a reward for completing the Monster Hunt side quest, while the other is found in a chest in the Fortress.

1. Complete the Monster Hunt Side Quest

The first Quintessential Transmutation Material is a reward for completing the Monster Hunt side quest in the City of Orphans.

To finish this quest, you’ll need to find all 17 children’s drawings scattered throughout the area. The quest begins when you pick up the first drawing near the Tribunal Square Lantern. From there, explore the City of Orphans, including Shamble Street and the sewers, to find the remaining drawings.

Once you’ve collected all 17 drawings, the quest will be completed, and you’ll receive one Quintessential Transmutation Material along with the Tiny Whisker Gift. You’ll also unlock The Book of Beasts achievement.

2. Find the Material in the Fortress

The second Quintessential Transmutation Material is a much easier find. It’s located in the Fortress near the Traverse Lantern.

Travel to the Traverse Lantern and look for two signal fires in the surrounding area. Light both fires to open the nearby gates. Go through the gate; you will find a chest containing the second Quintessential Transmutation Material on your immediate left.

Note: If you are planning to get all the trophies in Valor Mortis. You will need the Shield Bash to get the Abyssal Eviction Trophy. So, make sure to save on Quintessential Transmutation Material for the Shield Transmutation.

What Happens When You Max Out Each Transmutation?

There are three Transmutations in Valor Mortis: Fire, Stasis, and Shield. Each one can be upgraded to Level 5, but the final upgrade requires one Quintessential Transmutation Material.

You’ll need two Crude Transmutation Materials for Level 2, two Pure Transmutation Materials for Level 3, and two Distilled Transmutation Materials for Level 4. The final upgrade to Level 5 requires one Quintessential Transmutation Material.

Here’s what you get for maxing out each Transmutation.

Fire Transmutation

Fire is your primary offensive Transmutation and is the first one you unlock. It makes your hand turn into a flamethrower, which you can use to ignite enemies.

Upgrading Fire to Level 5 increases its damage from 15 to 20, while its Ignite damage also improves. You’ll unlock the final upgrade choice between Unstable Blaze and Never-Ending Inferno, letting you further specialize your fire-based attacks.

Fire is a good option if you want to focus on dealing damage and burning enemies, particularly when fighting groups.

Stasis Transmutation

Stasis lets you build up Stasis on enemies, slowing them down before freezing them completely. You can then attack frozen enemies to shatter the effect and deal additional damage.

At Level 5, Stasis reaches its maximum damage multiplier of 1.5, up from 1 at Level 1. You’ll also unlock the final upgrade choice between Expansion and Drain, giving you additional ways to specialize your Stasis build.

This is a useful option if you prefer controlling enemies and creating openings to land melee attacks.

Shield Transmutation

Shield is primarily a defensive Transmutation. As the name suggests, it protects you from incoming attacks by creating a barrier.

At Level 5, you’ll unlock Shield Bash, which lets you knock enemies backward with your shield. This is particularly useful for pushing enemies off ledges or to create space.

Shield also improves its damage scaling as you upgrade it, increasing the damage of the wave released after blocking attacks. At Level 4, you’ll unlock Impenetrable Defence, which lets the barrier protect you from Unblockable Attacks.

Which Is The Best Transmutation To Upgrade

If you are planning to get the Abyssal Eviction Trophy, you will have to max out the Transmutation. This leaves you to choose between maxing out Fire and Stasis.

Stasis is a bit more useful, since it allows you to control the pace of the fight. Fire isn’t a bad choice, but you more or less just get a damage boost from maxing it out. Stasis is just a bit more practical.

Ultimately, you can only max out two of the three Transmutations using the two known materials available in the game. Choose the abilities that best suit your playstyle, and make sure to reserve one for Shield if you want to unlock Shield Bash.
