How to Beat Quematrice in Monster Hunter Wilds

That's one fiery chicken.

Quematrice is one of the earliest monsters you’ll encounter in Monster Hunter Wilds, and it also teaches you some new mechanics if you are new to the series. For beginners, the fight could be one of the fiercest challenges as Quematrice is fast and agile compared to other monsters.

Telegraphing its attacks can be pretty difficult, but learning its behavior and weaknesses will help beat the monster. Here’s a complete Quematrice fight guide in Monster Hunter Wilds.

How to Defeat the Quematrice in Monster Hunter Wilds

Quematrice Weakness, Location, and Behavior

The Quematrice has two weak points: the head and the tail. It is immune to fire and only slightly weak to water. You must deal water damage to its head and tail to maximize your damage output. However, any weapon can do the job as long as you are skilled with the weapon.

The Quematrice roams around the Windward Plains near areas 7, 8, and 9. Beating the Quematrice is mandatory to finish the Hot on Their Tails quest, which is part of the main story. It is one of the earliest fights, but you’ll also encounter a stronger version in the future, like all Monster Hunter games.

The monster often acts idle and suddenly shakes its body to initiate certain attack moves. If you keep going around the Quematrice (not facing its head), its head will keep following you. If the body is still, it may use its tail to attack and catch you off guard.

Quematrice Fight Guide

The Quematrice’s short stature makes it look hard to hit, as it also moves fast. However, it does stay stationary at times, so you’ll need to position yourself near its weak spots, which are the head or the tail.

When hitting its tail, you want to pay attention to its head. If it looks back, it’ll most likely perform several different attacks using its tail. It may use a tail slam, hitting you when you are right behind its tail. There’s also a tail swipe where it’ll swipe you as long as you are around its tail.

It can also spin around and do a tail sweep imbued with fire, dealing more damage and causing the Fireblight debuff when hit. When affected by the Fireblight, you’ll take damage over time unless you cure the burn with a Nulberry or just by rolling around. Stepping on or rolling in water will also cure Fireblighted, but two consecutive rolls should extinguish the fire if you aren’t near a body of water.

Continue hitting the head or the tail as you try to avoid these attacks. Pay attention to its wounds. If you start opening up some of its wounds, you can capitalize on it and even get some monster parts.

Quematrice Material Drops in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Quematrice may drop the following materials:

  • Quematrice Scale
  • Quematrice Hide
  • Quematrice Crest
  • Quematrice Tail
  • Quematrice Igniter
  • Quematrice Certificate S
  • Wyvern Gem

You may get some extra scales, hides, and igniters if you destroy some of its wounds before beating the monster. Breaking its tail guarantees a Quematrice Tail to drop. The Wyvern Gem only drops when carved.
