How to Activate Takeovers in NBA 2K25

Flu game, every game.

In NBA 2K25, they changed the way you can “take over” the game because of the added GOAT skills in 2K titles. If you haven’t played a recent 2K game, activating a takeover will be confusing to most players. There are a lot of things to discuss regarding takeovers, and here’s everything you should know in activating them in NBA 2K25.

How to Turn On Takeovers in NBA 2K25

Activating takeovers doesn’t require pressing any buttons. Takeover abilities are passive bonuses with different levels now. Each takeover has five different levels, and you’ll need to unlock the takeover and levels four and five through finishing objectives while playing games.

There are several takeovers available, and they all depend on your player’s attributes. For example, if you have high mid-range and three-point shooting attributes, you’ll have the Middy Maestro and Spot-Up Shooter takeovers available. You’ll unlock these takeovers when you increase your player’s attributes.

Then, you can go to the takeover page in the main menu screen and look for all the takeovers you can equip. Look at their requirements and try to unlock them. If you have one takeover you want to upgrade, hover over it, and it should have an objective under the leveling bar. Finish the objectives to unlock the next levels of that specific takeover.

Once you have unlocked and equipped a takeover, you only have to play the game to activate it. Takeovers only require you to perform several positive actions to activate it. If you do these positive actions consecutively without any negative actions, it’ll fill the takeover meter faster. You’ll see your takeover meter burning up, meaning it is currently activated, and you are receiving the bonus already.

How to Increase Your Takeover Meter Faster in NBA 2K25

As mentioned before, you must perform consecutive positive actions during the game to increase your takeover meter. While some players find it hard to get positive actions, it is the negative actions that turn down the takeover meter even faster.

Here are some tips to get that takeover meter burning up. In a way, you can also use these tips to improve your teammate grade.

  • When you are sagging on defense, or you can’t close out on an open player, you can press L1 or LB, depending on your platform, and choose a random position to guard. You’ll change your mark, which means it won’t be your fault if the shot goes in. If you don’t contest the shot and you are the primary defender, you’ll get a “defensive breakdown” penalty.
  • When your offense gets stagnant, you can always wait until three or four seconds are left in the shot clock and pass the ball to your best player. You can easily get an assist since there’s a high chance your star player can make the shot even when contested.
  • Try to give a screen on every offensive possession whenever possible. You’ll get some free positive actions or grades for it. If it leads to a basket, you’ll get more.
  • Try to pass the ball to a random player instead of taking a “bad shot.” If the clock is running down, you don’t want to shoot a heavily contested shot since you’ll get a penalty for it. Pass it to a teammate and make them shoot the contested shot.

There are still many ways to get your takeover meter up, but all you need to keep in mind is the consistency of good actions. You want to string them together. Imagine an NBA team taking over for around three to four minutes of the game and taking all the momentum, which is mostly the inspiration for the takeover feature in the NBA 2K series.

You’ll do these even faster if you get your player to a 99 rating or level up the badges to make the game easier for you.
