Can You Directly Control Of Your Character With Keyboard and Mouse In Baldur’s Gate 3? (BG3)

Assume your positions.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is my first experience with a true CRPG, and I can’t bring myself away from the screen. While I spent a large portion of my younger years playing the Dark Alliance franchise, the more methodical pacing of the true D&D Baldur’s Gate experience has me excited to jump in more. I was very surprised to find that I was able to take direct control of my character when I booted in using a gamepad, but it begged the question; could I do the same with a mouse and keyboard? Let’s find out.

Can You Control Your Character Using A Keyboard And Mouse In Baldur’s Gate 3?

If you’re hoping to use your standard WASD movement scheme in Baldur’s Gate 3, you may walk away a little disappointed. If you’re planning on journeying through this particular adventure, you’re only going to have the option to control your character via mouse clicks rather than having direct control of your character.

However, if you’re looking for the best of both worlds, there is some great news. If you prefer the movement scheme that is brought into play by using a gamepad but like how battles play out while using a keyboard and mouse, you can swap between the two on the fly as I do. When I’m exploring the world before me, I’m in direct control of my Gnome, which looks a little too much like Nicolas Cage, but when I’m in battle, I’m using my keyboard and mouse to get the most precision possible.

To do this, all you need to do is hit a button or a key on the respective piece of equipment you would like to use. So, when you’re jumping into a battle, just click your mouse, and you’ll have full Keyboard and Mouse support, but when you’re done, hit any face button or a controller to take direct control of your character and team once again. It’s super easy, and it’s great to see that this type of support is available right on the fly.

Customization of your controls isn’t the only thing you can do in Baldur’s Gate 3, as the team wants you to have control of your whole experience. You can even change the color of your dice to match the kind of adventure you’re hoping to partake in. No matter if you’re far in the game or just starting, be sure to check out our Baldur’s Gate 3 section below, so you can find out all of the unique features that this epic adventure has in store for you.
