There are a bunch of races that will be available on early access, and Dungeons and Dragons fans will likely be familiar with all of them. We’re talking Tieflings, Elves, Halflings and basically the entire gamut of D&D races, each with their own particular origin stories. Judging from what was shown off, every racial origin and background is going to affect your character’s interaction with the world at least from the couple of preset characters that were shown, and we’re definitely getting very strong Divinity Original Sin II vibes from the pre-existing options that are available to players in terms of “canon” options. The classes that will be available are as follows, though this might change as the title moves out of early access:

  • Wizard
  • Cleric
  • Fighter
  • Ranger
  • Rogue
  • Warlock

Combat in Baldur’s Gate 3 definitely takes a lot of cues from previous Larian titles but with a much bigger influence from modern D&D mechanics. Enemies appear to get attacks of opportunity against characters moving out of their combat range, which is consistent with everyone’s favorite tabletop, and you will also roll at an advantage if you have the high ground depending on your class. When characters are downed in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll have the opportunity to succeed on Death Saving Throws to stabilize that character before they die. Those curious about the direct gameplay footage can check it out on the official Stadia YouTube channel as below:

You’ll also be able to critically succeed or fail on things, as evidenced by a Critical Miss popping up during the gameplay reveal with fatal consequences after that. Players can enter turn-based mode even when they’re not in combat, allowing you to prep adequately for encounters and to pick enemies off before they’re alerted to you. Talk about smart roleplaying! It’s also possible to do damage to your party members, so friendly-fire is definitely on.

The Prima team has been super excited for basically any mention of Larian’s latest, so the Baldur’s Gate 3 PAX East gameplay reveal has definitely got us frothing for more. While we’re not quite sure about what exactly is happening here with what looks like a senior mindflayer, a chase through Hell, and the unlikely pairing of a Vampire and a Cleric, but we’re honestly just thirsty for more. Curious about anything else to do with Baldur’s Gate 3? Check out these other tidbits that we’ve put together on our dedicated guides and news hub:
