We know of at least seven Dungeons & Dragons games in the works, among them being the triumphant return of Baldur’s Gate with Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios. While the studio said that it was still a “long ways off” when the unveil first went down, Hasbro is saying otherwise after they let it slip that the anticipated RPG will be landing in Early Access this year.
Now this isn’t some random leak. Hasbro is the parent company to Wizards of the Coast, so they know a thing or two about what’s going on in the D&D-verse. According to a recent investor’s call, Larian expects to launch Baldur’s Gate 3 into Early Access on Steam later this year while they work on making sure all of the other planned launches in the same vein are well taken care of.
It’s interesting to see the 2020 timeline, especially given what the studio mentioned previously. According to the studio, Baldur’s Gate 3 is their largest and most ambitious game yet: “We’re in production,” said Larian studio head Swen Vincke in a previous interview with GameSpot last year. “This is the biggest RPG we’ve ever made, so our team is now over 200 people internally and together with all the externals, we’re heading over 300 people. It’s a very big production. It’s the biggest that we’ve ever done.”
Divinity Original Sin 2 was no small game, so for hardcore RPG lovers like myself, this sounds like an absolute dream! If anybody can do right by this franchise in addition to the original devs, it’s Larian. The same interview alluded to the fact that the release could be years away, but perhaps they were referencing full launch and not Early Access.
For those attending PAX East, Baldur’s Gate 3 will be dropping some exciting gameplay action there, which will be our first time seeing something beyond a cinematic teaser, making it exciting for fans of such a longstanding franchise.
