The mood system in The Sims 3 uses an easy-to-read system of moodlets that instantly show all of the contributing factors to your Sim’s overall mood.
Use these moodlets to direct your family and make adjustments to behaviors, activities, or objects. If a Sim is Disgusted, look around for something unpleasant like dirty dishes or rotten leftovers.
However, if you note that your Sims are happy about getting a compliment from a smooth Sim (the Flattered moodlet), then make sure they talk to that Sim more often for a good ego-stroke.
Here are lists of all of the moodlets your Sims might experience during their lives. Each moodlet entry lists the effect on the overall mood and the duration of the effect. Most moodlets are self-explanatory.

Neutral Moodlets
Neutral moodlets did not affect your Sim’s mood, but they indicate activities that could have a bearing on mood soon, such as being a little hungry or having to go to the bathroom.

Negative Moodlets
Negative moodlets pull overall mood down, so side-step the ones that can be avoided. Those that cannot be avoided can sometimes be alleviated, though, through socials or activities.
Cure the Sore moodlet, for example, with a nice massage.
