3-4 Odd Defense Setups

3-4 ODD 

The 3-4 Odd formation is in 20 different team playbooks!

Will Buck 3 Press 

Setup 1: 

  1. Base align.
  2. Spread the D-line.
  3. Slide the LBs to the slot.
  4. User-control the left-of-screen MLB on a hook zone. 

This is a great way to bring pressure from the left side. You won’t need to keep the MLB blitzing, which gives you flexibility when user-controlling. 

Bonus Setup: 

  1. Base align.
  2. Spread the D-line.
  3. Re-blitz the left-of-screen DE.
  4. Contain (optional).
  5. User-control the blitzing LB in the middle and hot route him to a hook zone. 

This setup can bring pressure from the inside of the line. While it isn’t as consistent as edge pressure, it can be quick if you have a player who can get in. 

Cover 3 Sky (Pressure Right)

Setup 1:

  1. Base align.
  2. Spread the D-line.
  3. Reblitz the DT.
  4. Reblitz the ROLB and slide him out wide. 

Bonus Setup:

  1. Base align.
  2. Spread the D-line.
  3. Reblitz the DT.
  4. Reblitz the right-of-screen DE.
  5. Slide the right-of-screen LB out. 

Cover 4 (Pressure Both Ways) 

Setup:

  1. Base align.
  2. Spread the D-line.
  3. Slide out both OLBs.
  4. Global blitz the LBs.
  5. Contain.
  6. User-control the left-of-screen LB on a hook zone. 

This play can be called from multiple coverages and is ideal for third and long. Give Cover 4 a shot against opponents early and make them prove they can beat it with you shading underneath. If they don’t have the downfield throwing advantage on the outside, it will be tough for them to beat, and it stops the run surprisingly well.
