How to Fish in Hytale

Fishing feels essential to any survival game, and the same is true for Hytale, but the game takes a different approach to fishing. Here’s how you can go fishing in Hytale.

Can You Fish in Hytale?

Yes and no, you can fish in Hytale using traps or by manually attacking fish in shallower waters. However, there is no proper fishing minigame or fishing rods. You’ll be relying on traps you craft to collect fish for you. You can manually add fishing to your world by installing a fishing mod.

How to Catch Fish in Hytale

You can catch fish in Hytale using Fishing Traps, which can be crafted at the Farmer’s Workbench. Craft a Farmer’s Workbench from your regular Workbench and then upgrade it to level 2 to unlock Fishing Trap and Fishing Bait. The level 2 upgrade costs x50 Essence of Life, x5 Wheat, x5 Lettuce, and x5 Softwood Trunks. You can farm a lot of Essence of Life by learning how to farm in Hytale.

Each Fishing Trap costs x10 Any Wood, x50 Essence of Life, x20 Plant Fibers, and 1 Iron Ingot. It might sound expensive, but Fishing Traps do not get consumed upon use, so they’re well worth the investment.

Once you have your Fishing Trap, you can also craft Fishing Bait and add that. However, this is not necessary and simply increases your odds of finding rarer fish. Once you have your Fishing Trap, place it in a body of water and check back after half a day. You can interact with it to collect the fish it has caught.

Fish come in multiple rarities, with higher rarities giving more Fish Meat. The Legendary rarity of fish gives you x16 Fish Meat, which can then be grilled and eaten.

Alternatively, you can also simply attack and catch fish manually by going into shallow water where fish spawn. Inefficient, but it does work as a sort of ‘fishing’.

Tips for Fishing in Hytale

Fish will generally not generate in shallow bodies of water or player-generated bodies of water. You want to look for naturally generated bodies of water that are deeper than 4 blocks and allow for full submersion. Otherwise, fish might not spawn, and your traps will remain empty. Rivers and the ocean are great for generating fish quickly.

Secondly, bait is not necessary, but it does improve the rate and rarity of the fish you capture. However, even without Fishing Bait, your Fishing Traps will work as intended.

Hytale Fishing Mods

While fishing isn’t officially in Hytale yet, the Gone Fishing mode adds fishing with rods to Hytale. You can find it on CurseForge and install it using our modding guide.

Currently, the mod lets you craft the fishing rod with 2 Sticks and 3 Linen Scraps. To use the fishing rod, just equip it and right-click while looking at water to launch a bobber into the water. The bobber will be dragged underwater when a fish can be caught and reeled in by right-clicking the fishing rod again. You can currently catch any fish in the base game.
