Why are COD MW2 Players Receiving False Bans? – Answered

It's that time of the year again. Sheesh.

Activision (Activision Blizzard?) appears to be prone to incidents in these past few years it seems, whether this is about internal matters within the company or issues with the launches of their new games. Various forums such as Reddit, Twitter, you name it, everything exploded with rage due to a huge ban wave in COD MW2. People are very upset, and one gamer even took it to the streets and marched all the way to Activision’s office in Austin, Texas. What’s this all about and why are Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 players getting permanently banned left and right?

This issue is still under investigation, and Activision and Infinity Ward have remained tight-lipped (at the time of writing, anyway), so everything is still in the domain of speculation, educated guesses, and independent research by players.

Thousands (we fear it actually may be tens of thousands) of players were met with a message that informed them that they have been permanently banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Now, this would not have been an issue if the appeal system worked and you could resolve this with a designated department at Activision.

However, many are reporting on Reddit that their appeals got automatically declined with a generic, canned response. People are rallying around various online petitions to have this investigated and resolved ASAP, but it seems that, according to some sources, this will take a while, because allegedly, Activision is reportedly understaffed. This means that, well, everyone will have to wait.

According to independent researchers, if you had any of the following software running while you were playing COD MW2 (even if it was single-player), you are at risk of getting the good ol’ banhammer:

  • Corsair iCUE
  • Logitech G Hub
  • MSI Afterburner
  • Overwolf
  • Razer Synapse 3
  • VPN (any)

However, some players claim that they got banned without using any of this software, which makes the situation even more confusing. There has also been a lot of talk about refund requests being denied, and a lot of virtual pitchforks and torches are being seen as many vow to never give money to Activision again.

The problem is that this is the THIRD Call of Duty game that this incident is happening in. Both times, it was resolved without much noise and was forgotten very quickly. Honestly, it may be time to stop forgetting about these disasters and end the complacency that has been going on with “AAA” games.

Consumer rights, anyone? People just want to enjoy their games and use the product that they have purchased. Players are hoping that we will see this resolved soon and that there will be some accountability for this dumpster fire.
