Feeding your animals is integral to running a farm or taking care of your designated pets within Minecraft, even over a decade later. So much time has passed and the importance of feeding horses or anything else hasn’t changed, but the methods to provide the food have.

It can be tough to tell what horses eat in Minecraft if you don’t look for any guides because each animal has preferences that can change its temperament and the overall health that it has. To ensure you’re using the best food items possible, we’ll cover what horses eat so you can ride off into the wild without a worry in the world.

Minecraft – What do Horses Eat?

Players can choose from six different types of food to feed their horses, and each one serves a different purpose, so randomly feeding isn’t the best idea. Each one will have some sort of HP bonus and can help your horse in a pinch, but it’s not the best option. Below you can find all six food options, and then we’ll break down the use for each.

  • Wheat
  • Hay Bale
  • Golden Apple
  • Golden Carrot
  • Sugar
  • Apple

The easiest things for your horse to eat are Wheat and Sugar, but they are also the weakest by far. Once again, these are used as food when you have nothing else and want a small boost at the very least. However, the best way to boost HP is to use the Hay Bale over anything else. If you’re looking to help your horse’s temper, though, the Hay Bale is useless.

Golden Apples will provide the largest to your horse’s temper and mood level. This is the way to go if you want them to like you. You’ll even still get a growth and health boost. The only real downside is the difficulty in finding Golden Apples or the ingredients to make them. Either way, there’s always something that your horse will eat in Minecraft.
