The main goal of the Charge Blade is to use one of the weapon’s modes to power it’s own attacks or the other weapon mode. There are two modes for the Charge Blade: Sword Mode and Axe Mode.

The weapon starts in Sword Mode, so players will use slashing attacks to damage monsters. Sword Mode also comes with a shield, so players can guard themselves from enemy attacks.

Dealing damage in Sword Mode will fill up Phials, located underneath the Sharpness meter. The Phials will first glow yellow, then red, and then bright red which will cause attacks to bounce off monsters.

Players can then bank the charge by holding R2 (RT) + Circle (B). This will power up the shield icon next to the Phials and attacks can deal extra damage. Simply tapping the banking combo will turn the Phials grey and can be used for charged sword attacks by holding Triangle (Y) while charging for additional damage.

Players will then go through the Phial-filling phase again with banked grey Phials. Phials can be overcharged by going through the process twice, noted by the glowing yellow fire exploding from the Phials. Overcharging gives more damage when using the Phials for attacks.

Once you have full Phials, Axe Mode can be activated with R2 (RT) + Triangle (Y). This giant axe can deliver huge damage and elemental attacks with Circle (B) or amped elemental attacks with Triangle (Y) + Circle (B).

One of the best Charge Blade abilities is the Focus Slash: Double Rend, activated when holding L2 (LT) and tapping R1 (RB) on a monster’s red wound. This will cause Power Axe Mode, where holding down attacks will deal extra hits with every attack.
