Minecraft UUID: What is it and How to Use it? – Answered

Very unique

When you think about other players in Minecraft, what do you usually imagine? Two immediate guesses are probably their skin and username! After all, if someone has a funny name or cool-looking skin, they’ll catch your eye and occasionally make you want to check out their ingame stats or NameMC page. However, we’d have to talk about UUIDs to look at a true identifier. If you’d like to learn more, continue reading to discover what a Minecraft UUID is and how it is normally used.

What is UUID in Minecraft?

UUIDs in Minecraft, also known as a Universally Unique Identifier, is a 32-character mix of numbers and letters assigned to your account. Every Minecraft account has a unique UUID, and it’s a way for the game to figure out that you are your own player.

Simply put, while you can have the same skin as someone and create a username someone else has used in the past, you’ll never have the same UUID as another person. Even if you make multiple Minecraft accounts, they will all have different UUIDs to identify them uniquely. This also makes it much harder to pretend to be someone else since that person also has their own identifier.

What Can You Use UUID For?

Admittedly, it depends on how you view it and whether you’re a server owner or player. UUIDs are mainly used to link your account to game progression, achievements and server rankings. If you’re playing on a server with ranked games and leaderboards, your UUID helps you connect to this system. That way, even if you change your username, the server will automatically update your rankings and information without resetting your progress.
