Minecraft Java’s Updated PC Requirements Sound Scary, But They’re Not

Still very manageable.

Minecraft’s Java Edition is still supported by Mojang, and after 17 years of that continued support, the team is finally updating the Java Edition’s requirements to better reflect modern hardware. While it may sound like a big change, the new requirements are still fairly tame and target most budget systems today.

6 GB VRAM

It’s a lot of information to take in, but rest assured, most of the hardware listed here is on the budget-friendly side. For a 30 FPS experience, you only need something like the GTX 950, which launched over a decade ago and comes with just 2 GB of VRAM. Likewise, the Radeon RX 460 debuted in 2016, and virtually any mid-range GPU released within the last five to seven years will significantly outperform both cards. You’re not going to have a good time playing a modern title on either of these GPUs, but they’re good enough for Minecraft.

For the recommended settings, the RTX 2060 is Microsoft’s go-to GPU for a 1080p, 60 FPS experience using the Fancy preset. While the RTX 2060 is no longer considered ideal for many modern AAA games, it’s still more than capable of delivering an excellent Minecraft Java Edition experience, making it a sensible recommendation.

On the CPU side, Microsoft recommends the Ryzen 5 5600 if you want to crank up the settings, while the older Ryzen 3 3100 is sufficient if you’re willing to dial things back. Even today, the Ryzen 5 5600 remains an excellent value processor that performs well in a wide range of modern games. Finally, while 16 GB of RAM may sound like a lot, it’s become the standard for modern PC gaming, making Mojang’s recommendation fairly reasonable.

Updating these specifications was long overdue, especially as the team prepares to transition from the aging OpenGL API to Vulkan, which offers significantly better performance and stability on supported hardware. As a result, your GPU must now support Vulkan 1.3 to run the Java Edition. Considering that this version continues to receive active development and that the previous system requirements remained largely unchanged for nearly 17 years, a modest increase in the minimum and recommended hardware is both expected and reasonable.
