How to Tame and Ride a Nautilus in Minecraft
Never worry about coming up for air again!
Traveling through the ocean on your own is one of the most dangerous adventures you can embark on in Minecraft. Luckily, you can make any aquatic journey a lot easier with the help of a Nautilus, but first, you’ll need to know how to tame and ride one.
While many mobs have been around since Minecraft first launched, there are also plenty that have been added over the years, including the Nautulus. This means you likely aren’t as familiar with it, so here’s how to tame and ride a Nautilus in Minecraft.
How to Find a Nautilus in Minecraft

You have a chance of coming across a Nautilus anytime you’re swimming around in the ocean, as they can spawn in all ocean biomes. They spawn anywhere between Y level 38 to 58. You may come across one alone, two at once, or a full party of three, but never more than this amount.
How to Tame a Nautilus in Minecraft
You can tame a Nautilus by feeding it either a single Pufferfish or a Bucket of Pufferfish. The best way to get a Pufferfish is by using a fishing rod to catch one, as they have an 11.1 percent chance of being caught.
You can also kill Pufferfish by finding them underwater, but they’re rather dangerous since they’re poisonous and can chip away at your health quite fast, so it’s generally best to either attack from afar or simply fish until you get one. Each Pufferfish you feed a Nautilus has a one in three chance of taming them, so luck plays a large role in how easy or difficult it is to befriend this creature.

How to Ride a Nautilus in Minecraft
You can ride a Nautilus by equipping it with a Saddle. Like most rideable mobs, you can technically hop on one without a Saddle, but you have no control over the creature without one. Because of this, it’s best to focus on getting a Saddle before you set out to find one so you can be prepared and ride them back to your base area once you’ve befriended them.
While riding a Nautilus, you’re granted the Breath of the Nautilus effect. This effect provides you with an endless amount of air while underwater, which means you don’t need to resurface as long as you remain riding this creature.
How to Feed and Heal Nautilus in Minecraft

To feed or heal your Nautilus, you’ll need some kind of fish. Certain fish are better for hunger and health restoration than others, but all fish get the job done.
Cooked Salmon is by far the best option, but Cooked Cod is a close second. And if you don’t feel like cooking, plain old Cod and Salmon work okay too, but you’ll need a lot more of both to fill up the full health bar. Here’s a breakdown of all available feeding options for the Nautilus and how many hearts each one restores.
| Food | Hearts |
|---|---|
| Cooked Salmon | 12 |
| Cooked Cod | 10 |
| Raw Cod | 4 |
| Bucket of Cod | 4 |
| Raw Salmon | 4 |

There’s plenty more to uncover while riding around on your loyal new Nautilus friend. If you’re not sure what to tackle next, consider working on getting a Spear, meeting some Armadillos, and making some Wolf Armor.
