There are three different ways you can obtain a spear, including crafting, defeating certain mobs, and looting certain structures. The process looks different depending on which method you use, so here’s a breakdown of all options.

  • Crafting. Like most weapons, this item can be crafted. Overall, this is the easiest way to get your hands on a Spear, as this one is guaranteed, while all other methods rely on luck.
  • Defeating certain mobs. Some mobs may spawn wielding a Spear, and if you defeat them, there’s a chance they’ll drop their trusty spear as loot you can grab. All mobs that can spawn with this weapon are:
    • Husks (Iron Spear)
    • Zombies (Iron Spear)
    • Zombie Horsemen (Iron Spear)
    • Camel Husk Jockey Riders (Iron Spear)
    • Piglins (Gold Spear)
    • Zombified Piglins (Gold Spear)
  • Looting certain structures. Some chests that can be found around specific structures have a chance of containing a Spear as random loot. The structures that may have one are:
    • Ocean Ruins
    • Bastion Remnant
    • End City
    • Village
    • Buried Treasure

You can craft a Spear using two Sticks and two of your preferred material out of the available options. To make this item, open up a crafting table, then place a stick in the bottom left corner of the bottom row, in the middle of the middle row, and your desired material in the top right corner of the top row, as pictured above.

All materials you can combine with Sticks to craft a Spear are as follows.

  • Any Planks (Spruce Planks, Oak Planks, etc.)
  • Certain Stones (Blackstone, Cobblestone, etc.)
  • Copper Ingot
  • Gold Ingot
  • Iron Ingot
  • Diamond
  • Netherite Ingot

How to Use a Spear in Minecraft

The Spear is a long-range melee weapon that can be used to perform slow jab attacks or pointed forward to dish out powerful charged attacks. You can use it while standing, walking, or running, just like you can all other weapons, but you can also hop on a mount to attack while riding around.

Your default attack is the quick, piercing jab, and can be performed by activating the same button you use to swing with a sword or any other weapon. It varies by platform, but you can check your settings to see what it is for you. Your secondary attack is the charged move, which can be triggered by facing your enemy and selecting the secondary attack button. On the keyboard, it’s right-click, but if you’re playing elsewhere, check your settings for it.

Spears don’t have critical hits or knockback attacks granted from sprinting, so it takes a while to familiarize yourself with their unique damage system. To make up for this, they are able to attack from much further away and can strike multiple enemies at once.

The Spear was one of many features released in the Mounts of Mayhem update. If you’re not sure what to do next, there’s plenty to uncover around every vast Minecraft world, so you might consider using an Ominous Bottle, making some Wolf Armor, and getting to know some Armadillos.
