Is Nintendo Switch OLED The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Edition Worth it?

For starters – do you already have a Nintendo Switch? If the answer is “yes”, do you have an OLED model? The release of a new Zelda game is an extremely good moment to get a Nintendo console or upgrade to a model with a drastically better screen. During the last gameplay demonstration, we saw that Tears of the Kingdom works very well, in fact, it looks like the frame rate will be more stable than in the 2017s predecessor. Due to this better optimization, we expect the game to work much better in docked mode when it doesn’t matter which version of Switch you have, but also in the portable mode – when the OLED screen makes all the difference.

As the OLED model does not differ hardware-wise from the standard Switch except for the different screen, the performance will be identical. Many expected that Nintendo would release a new version of the Switch console with beefed-up hardware for the occasion of the release of the new Zelda game – but that did not happen.

As for price, the standard Nintendo Switch OLED model currently retails for $349.99 while The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition Nintendo Switch OLED Model is $359.99. For $10 more, you get a stylized dock with a gold Hylian Crest and other ornate designs, as well as two gold JoyCons with patterns from the game.

Does the Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED come with a copy of the new Zelda game? Well, bless your heart if this was an honest question. See, the world of gaming doesn’t work that way anymore. You still need to buy the game separately, and the fun thing about it is that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be a bit more expensive than the usual Switch titles with a price of $69.99 for the regular version of the game.

So, as a final answer to the “Is it Worth it?” question, the answer is yes it is – if you don’t own an OLED model already. Tears of the Kingdom is shaping out to be an incredible game that many players (including ourselves) will spend hundreds of hours with, but if you only plan to play mostly in docked TV mode or already own an OLED console, this special edition may be worth getting solely for collecting purposes.

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is releasing exclusively for Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023, and the special Tears of the Kingdom Zelda-themed Switch OLED model will be available on April 28, 2023.
