How to Fire an Underbarrel Grenade Launcher in Escape from Tarkov

When you find a weapon with an underbarrel grenade launcher, you won’t be able to use it if you don’t have the right ammo. It goes for every single gun in the game. Equip the weapon with the under-barrel grenade launcher. If the weapon slot is on 2 or 3, you have to press the weapon slot again to switch to the weapon’s under-barrel grenade launcher. For example, if your M4A1 with the grenade launcher is set to 2, you have to pull out the M4A1 by pressing 2 and pressing 2 again to switch to the grenade launcher.

Once the grenade launcher is equipped, you must load it with 40x46mm grenades. Here’s the list of grenades you can use:

  • 40x46mm M381 (HE) grenade (short range)
  • 40x46mm M386 (HE) grenade (long range)
  • 40x46mm M406 (HE) grenade (long range)
  • 40x46mm M433 (HEDP) grenade (long range)
  • 40x46mm M441 (HE) grenade (short range)
  • 40x46mm M576 (MP-APERS) grenade (shotgun or bullet grains)

If you have any of these in your rig or pockets, reloading the grenade launcher will put one of these inside. Remember, before the rig, it’ll always burn through grenades in your pockets first. So, if you want some short-range grenades as your default, put them in your pockets so you don’t have to open the inventory every time to make swaps. Once you have reloaded the under-barrel grenade launcher, just point and shoot.

Now, you might be asking how to get the weapon with the under-barrel grenade launcher in the first place. Most players will only find the under-barrel grenade launcher attachments but may have no idea how to use them.

How to Mod an Underbarrel Grenade Launcher to Your Weapon in Escape from Tarkov

There are two under-barrel grenade launchers in the game: the GP-25 Kostyor 40mm under-barrel grenade launcher and the M203 40mm under-barrel grenade launcher.

The GP-25 Kostyor 40mm under-barrel grenade launcher is for AK-based weapons like AKMs, AK-74s, or the AK 100 series. The M203 40mm under-barrel grenade launcher is for AR-15 weapons like M4A1s, HKS, and TX-15s.

To place the M203 40mm under-barrel grenade launcher on an AR-15, it must have any of the following preset or handguard to attach to:

  • AR-15 KAC RIS handguard
  • AR-15 KAC URX 3 8-inch handguard
  • AR-15 Daniel Defense RIS II 9.5 handguard
  • AR-15 Colt M4 Carbine length handguard
  • AR-15 Daniel Defense RIS II 12.25 handguard
  • AR-15 KAC “URX 3.1” 10.75-inch handguard
  • AR-15 Strike Industries Viper carbine length M-LOK handguard

The GP-25 Kostyor 40mm under-barrel grenade launcher needs the correct AK with any of the following handguards:

  • AK 100-series polymer handguard
  • AK-74 wooden handguard
  • AK-74 polymer handguard
  • AKM wooden handguard
  • AK Strike Industries TRAX 1 handguard
  • AK TDI AKM-L handguard
  • AK Zenit B-10 Handguard
  • AK Zenit B-10M handguard with B-19 upper mount
  • AK CNC Guns OV GP handguard
  • VPO-136 Vepr-KM wooden handguard
  • VPO-209 wooden handguard

Once you have modded the weapon, you can follow the guide mentioned before on how to fire it.

Running weapons with under-barrel grenade launchers is very expensive. You’ll need a method to lower the costs by looking for cheap 40x46mm grenades, or you can just farm money faster and buy them from the flea market. You might have a great chance of looting some of these attachments and weapons when opening Shatun’s hideout or any one of Ref’s awesome keys tied to Tarkov Arena.
