The spectral steed Torrent is an important character in Elden Ring, both for story reasons and for utility. Getting around the vast spaces of The Lands Between atop a speedy mount makes the tough game much easier, so here’s how to summon your horse in Elden Ring.
Best Ways to Summon Torrent in Elden Ring
If you are a fair way into Elden Ring, then you will need to equip the Spectral Steed Whistle and activate it to summon Torrent. If this is your first time stepping into The Lands Between, you will need to jump through a few hoops before you can utilize your majestic steed.
How to Unlock Torrent
To unlock your spectral steed you will first need to follow a fairly linear path until you first step out into the green fields of Limgrave. Here you will see a ruined church and a large knight on horseback in the distance. Sneak past him and make your way to the area marked on the map. There will be a site of grace near a large gate and a ruined village.
Rest at the site of grace and you will be greeted by Melina. Listen to her dialogue and then accept her proposal. At the end of the conversation, you will receive the Spectral Steed Whistle and unlock access to Torrent.

Equip the Spectral Steed Whistle
Once you have the item from Melina, head into your menu and select equipment. In the quick items section near the bottom of the screen, you will be able to select a slot and equip the Spectral Steed Whistle. Now you can return to the game and cycle through your quick items to activate the Whistle and summon Torrent. However, there is an easier way to ensure that your horse is only two button presses away.
Using the Item Pouch
This is my preferred way to summon Torrent and is also useful for Flasks of Crimson Tears, Cerulean Tears, and Wonderous Physick.
Open your menu and navigate to the right-hand side where there is a section called Pouch. Here you can select four items that can be quickly accessed at any time. Select your desired slot and equip the Spectral Steed Whistle, then return to the game.
You can now hold Y or Triangle to open up the pouch and press the corresponding direction button to use an item. On mouse and keyboard, this is bound to E and the arrow keys, which is less helpful.
With this setup, you can immediately bring out Torrent, regardless of which item you have in your quick items slots.
Reviving Torrent in Combat
If Torrent is killed while you are dueling with a dragon or trying to take down a Night’s Cavalry, he can still be brought back for a quick escape or to chase down foes. Attempt to resummon Torrent and you will be asked if you want to spend a Flask of Crimson Tears to resurrect him. This can be a tough choice as those limited healing items can be the difference between a clutch win and a frustrating death, but the option is always there.
