Most survival games utilize some form of Hotkey bar. Sons of the Forest, however, does not. While there isn’t a Hotkey bar, there is a way to quickly switch between items of your choosing. This can be done by using your backpack. The backpack might be tricky for some to get the hang of, but once you do, it is quite handy. How to Use the Backpack in Sons of the Forest
In Sons of the Forest, the backpack is your hotkey. Simply hold the I button to pull your backpack out. With your backpack out, you can quickly switch between items.
Now the point of hotkeys is to swap between items of your choice. To do so, open your inventory by tapping I and right-click on your backpack. This will add random items to it.

You can remove certain items from your backpack by highlighting them and right-clicking. You can add items to your backpack hotkey by right-clicking them as well.
It is a bit confusing at first, but I actually enjoy this version of a hotkey bar. It is not always taking up screen space, and you can access it whenever. It does get quite hard to see your backpack in the dark, but you can flick your Lighter on by pressing L to get a better look.
