How to Get the Wrench in Amnesia: The Bunker

This is a surprise tool that will help us later!

The puzzles in Amnesia: The Bunker are simply streamlined. I do not see another way to express this – they just flow naturally. You do not even feel like you’re stuck in a puzzle, and it serves the immersion so well. One of the first puzzle pieces is the Wrench, which you will use to get through various vents that exist around the Bunker. Here’s how you can get the Wrench in Amnesia: The Bunker and get to work.

Where to Find the Wrench in Amnesia: The Bunker

The Wrench is a very important tool you can’t clear the game without (as an example, the lighter, gas mask, and gas grenades are completely redundant). For this guide, you will need the map. Luckily, we have the entire map revealed which you can bookmark.

The Wrench is located near the Administrator’s Office, in the Mission Storage, where all the named lockers are. The locker you are looking for is of Foreman Stafford. See the screenshot below for reference:

You may be wondering, “Why don’t you give us the Locker Combination Code and be done with it?” but that’s a story for another article.

You just need to do this the hard way, there’s no beating around the bush. Foreman Stafford is located in the Pillbox. On the map of the Bunker, you will spot Pillbox easily on the far east side. Let’s prepare you for the journey.

How to Obtain the Wrench in Amnesia: The Bunker

I made a detailed screenshot that explains how to gain access to Pillbox. In the top left corner, you will see your starting marker from the Administrator’s Room.

Follow the Red Arrows. In the section where you appear to be going through a wall, there are a lot of rats.

How to Deal With Rats in Amnesia: The Bunker

First of all, don’t kill them. It’s a waste of ammo. They will just come back. Just scare them away temporarily. Here’s what you can do to get rid of Rats in Amnesia: The Bunker:

  • Make a torch. You need to combine a Stick and a piece of Cloth and, of course, you need a Lighter. With the lit Torch in your hands, hold the aim button (right-click) and then hit the left-click to wave it around and scare them. If they start running, it’s good, put the torch back, because it will burn out fast.
  • Get a flare. There are quite a few of them around, but once you deploy it at a location, you can’t move it, and they take up inventory spots. In this “Rat Tunnel”, there are around three groups of rats, and you won’t have 6 flares to go back and forth.
  • Get meat. Rats love raw meat. Works in a similar fashion as a flare.

Once you are in the Chapel, turn right and find the key in a closet. There is a possibility to break open the Pillbox door, but given how close the two locations are, you shouldn’t waste your utility. Plus, the noise attracts the Beast.

Once you enter this closet/cupboard, the key should be on your right. Before you do that, please check the table which is shown left in the screenshot above. Clear the entire room and spot any Dog Tags or other useful items.

When I look at it now, it looks like a confession room more than a cupboard/closet, but it’s so dark, you can’t make anything out in this game, really. Once you pick up the key, a scripted event will start and the Monster (Beast) will come in. Close the door and stay there. The Beast should not discover you. Hide the flashlight and do not make a sound!

Once everything is all quiet and dandy, move out and follow the green arrow to the Pillbox.

After unlocking the Pillbox (grab the key from your inventory and point it to the keyhole) you will see a ladder leading up.

Now, there’s something I’ve noticed; on Easy Mode, there’s a save lantern there; on Normal Mode, there’s not. Next to the ladder are some wooden boards that block you from entering the adjacent room. Now, that’s what I call worthy of breaking, but I’d suggest you take a brick to do so, and not waste a grenade, if possible. After you loot the goods, run up the ladders (the Monster can’t get you there).

You will see some cool stuff in the Pillbox, along with the Dog Tag of the late Foreman Stafford. Oh and by the way, keep your head down. If you see a rifle being shot, that bullet’s heading your way. You can even troll the German snipers by holding a helmet above your head, standing up, and then crouching down, and in most cases, they’ll knock it out of your hands. You can’t fight them, though. Just grab the stuff and run back (blue arrow).

How to Use the Wrench in Amnesia: The Bunker

When it’s in your hands, hold right-click to aim, and when you approach the top corner of a vent, you will see a symbol that will prompt you to click the left click and commence the animation of removing the screw.

And there you have it. The Wrench is now yours, after such a long endeavor, and many risks of being caught by the Beast Monster. Next up: How to Get the Chain Cutters in Amnesia: The Bunker.
