Rough Hide is one of the most important early resources in Windrose. They are hard to farm in bulk, but they are used for many useful things, especially if you have a big party on your server.

Even if you know where to get these Rough Hides, you’ll still want a way to farm way more to save some time. Here’s a quick guide for the best way to get Rough Hides in Windrose.

Where to Get A Lot of Rough Hide in Windrose

Before anything else, it is important to note that Windrose has procedurally generated worlds with more than a hundred seeds available, meaning each playthrough has a different layout.

With this in mind, you just have to focus on where these Rough Hides drop, which are mainly from boars. On your starting island in the Coastal Jungle biome, boars could be very scarce. There might be just one place to find a sounder or a group of boars. Since a boar can only give you 1 Rough Hide in the early levels, that is not enough.

You typically find boars in the forest area, and rarely near the shore. So, go to the forest area of an island and look for boars like Sows and Boars. These are the easiest types of boars to deal with because they only have a simple melee attack (Boars sometimes do a 2-hit combo). Once you find the spot on your island with boars, mark it on the map so you don’t forget.

These boars respawn after a day, so marking their spot will be useful, especially if your starting island is quite big.

If you need way more Rough Hides, explore the nearby islands. I suggest doing the main quest first because you’ll definitely encounter more boars in these main quest islands. You’ll also notice that there are more boars in other islands, and there are two new types: the Charging Boar and the Savage Boar. These are way more dangerous than the regular boars.

Charging Boars lock in on a player and charge at them, damaging and knocking back the player with an unblockable attack. The only way to dodge it is by jumping at the exact time it is about to hit you. Savage Boars flail around, damaging players nearby, forcing you to wait until it stops before attacking again.

When you find an island with multiple boar spawns, I suggest creating a fast travel point to this island. This should save you some Homeward Journey potions and sailing time when farming Rough Hides. These islands typically have other resources like Mystic Orchids and other crops like Sweet Potatoes, so if you find all of these in one island, it is definitely worth using a Fast Travel Bell to create a fast travel point here.

What Are Rough Hides Used For in Windrose?

The reason why Rough Hides are so important is that it is used for several things. They are used to craft most of the basic armor, including the upgrades for each piece. Each armor piece requires two or three Rough Hides to make, and upgrading them requires two more Rough Hides per level. That’s already around 60+ Rough Hides needed to complete a fully-upgraded basic armor set for a player.

Apart from armor crafts and upgrades, some weapons also need Rough Hides to craft and upgrade, like the Saber. The Sailor Backpack, which is needed to increase your backpack space, also needs Rough Hides. Your ship’s boarding party gear also needs Rough Hides (once you get the Ketch ship)

If you ever find rarer gear for your adventures, you’ll want to upgrade those too using Rough Hides. In short, you are going to need hundreds of Rough Hides, meaning you’ll be killing hundreds of boars, so make sure to find a good spot to farm those boars.
