Getting a bigger inventory is absolutely crucial in Windrose. Spending 10-15 minutes sailing to another island and getting your backpack full in less than a minute is definitely a nuisance.

However, you can increase your inventory space, and here’s how to do it early so you lessen those roundtrips and save some time in Windrose.

How to Get Bigger Backpacks in Windrose

To increase your inventory or backpack space, you must get a backpack. The most basic backpack is the Torn Sailor Backpack, crafted at the workbench.

The Torn Sailor Backpack is available early, as it only requires a Workbench Level 1 station. To craft the early backpack, you need 2x Coarse Fabric and 1x Rope. Both the Coarse Fabric and Rope are crafted in the same workbench for 3x Plant Fiber each. This early Torn Sailor Backpack gives you +4 backpack slots.

Now, how do you get something bigger? This is the part that can be a little confusing, especially if you are relatively new to survival-crafting games.

The bigger backpack is still crafted in the same workbench, which is the Sailor Backpack. However, it indicates that you need a Level 2 station to at least craft one, even if you have the materials ready.

There are no upgrade buttons in the workbench when you interact with it, as you would see with other weapons and armor. To upgrade your workbench, you must go to the building panel (pressing B), and look for the Workbench section in the “Crafting & Utilities” tab.

You’ll see the Workbench craft, and there should be a Sawhorse next to it. Craft the Sawhorse, which needs 20x Wood and 10x Copper Ingots. Place the Sawhorse inside your bonfire area. This building is not interactable, and placing it naturally upgrades your workbench in the same bonfire area. That’s worth keeping in mind if you have multiple bases.

When that is done, you now have a Level 2 Workbench. To craft a Sailor Backpack, you need 1x Torn Sailor Backpack, 5x Rough Hide, and 2x Copper Ingot. Finding more Rough Hides could be the challenge here since they are used for a lot of things, and you might not find enough boars in the area. The Sailor Backpack adds 8 backpack spaces instead of 4. This is how progression in crafting works, and you’ll get bigger and bigger backpacks as you progress.

If you don’t have the Sawhorse available yet, you must progress through the quests first.

Next, if you are wondering if you would ever get a ship that can hold inventory, you will after finishing the “I Need a Bigger Boat” quest and getting the Ketch.
