How to Get New Purpose in Destiny 2
If you’ve searched up this specific gun, it’s likely for two reasons. The first is that Duality, the Witch Queen Expansion dungeon, is the dungeon of the week. And second, you’ve been killed by New Purpose in the Crucible and want to get it for yourself.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you like your endgame activities), New Purpose can only be obtained in one way: by defeating a particular Duality encounter. More precisely, by bringing the terrifying Nightmare of Caital to heel in the final encounter of the dungeon. By defeating Calus’s Nightmare daughter, you’ll gain access to two drops, which can be both weapons and armor.

There are six possible items, with New Purpose being a potential drop for both. That gives you a 33% chance of obtaining it. But once you have it, what’s the best roll for it? And is it worth farming?
God Roll for New Purpose in Destiny 2
Duality is an excellent gun for PvP and it’s no slouch for PvE either. For that reason, the god roll for New Purpose is more PvP based, but many of these perks have dual-utility.
- Basic Barrel → Arrowhead Brake. +30 Recoil Control, +10 Handling.
- Basic Magazine → Ricochet Rounds. +5 Range, Stability +10.
- Basic Trait 1 → Perpetual Motion. While continuously moving: after 2 seconds, +5 Stability, +5 Handling, +5 Reload at x 1 Stack. After 10 seconds: +15 Stability, +15 Handling, +15 Reload at x2 stacks.
- Basic Trait 2 → Desperado. After Reloading within 6 seconds of a Precision Kill: Delay after shooting is reduced by 30%, increasing Rate of Fire for 6 seconds. Can be refreshed.
The best mod for New Purpose is Full Auto Retrofit, which will turn this Pulse Rifle into an assault rifle. Good luck farming it!
