When you first begin the game, gain access to the Field Guide and open your gear menu, you’ll notice that you have 20 slots available. While this is your limit for a while, you can gain multiple upgrades to increase this to 40. Doubling your inventory space sounds like a pretty good deal, but it’ll require a lot of work. Be prepared to travel around the entire map for this!

Gaining more gear slots requires you to solve Merlin Trials, which you’ll begin doing after completing the Trials of Merlin quest. They’ll appear as small leaf icons on your map and require Mallowsweet Leaves to initiate. Depending on the trial, you’ll also need various spells, ranging from using Incendio to light torches to blasting rocks with Confringo.

As you solve Merlin Trials, you’ll reach certain milestones under the challenges menu that reward you with additional gear slots. To access this page, head into Challenges, select Exploration and scroll down until you see “Complete Merlin Trials”.

You’ll have to head into this menu to redeem your reward as you reach each milestone. Without doing this, it’ll sit there waiting without automatically applying to your character. This is why you may still only have 20 gear slots, even after finishing a bunch of trials. After redeeming it here, your limit will instantly increase, allowing you to carry more gear at a time.

Obtaining Mallowsweet for Merlin Trials

Considering there are nearly 100 Merlin Trials in Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll need a lot of Mallowsweet leaves to get them all! To find Mallowsweet, you can purchase them individually from The Magic Neep or get some seeds, which you can grow once you unlock the Room of Requirement.
