When you find a weapon that you like in Diablo 4, you don’t want to just toss it to the side, and that means upgrades are necessary for the item to remain viable. To upgrade your Legendary weapons, you need to get some Baleful Fragments which means that other items must be sacrificed in the process.
How to Farm Baleful Fragments in Diablo 4
Baleful Fragments are earned by salvaging your Legendary weapons in Diablo 4. Any time I collect a Legendary weapon I no longer need, I bring it to the Blacksmith to break it down, which gives me some extra ore and a Baleful Fragment. Because upgrades can get expensive in terms of materials, more than one weapon will be needed for salvaging.

I don’t recommend upgrading your Legendary weapons until the late-game section of Diablo 4 because it will take a few Baleful Fragments just to get a decent upgrade. The fragments can also be used at the Occultest to change powerful Aspect skills on your build. In other words, Baleful Fragments are incredibly important in Diablo 4, but they should be saved for when you need them.

If you are having a tough time getting Legendary weapons, I recommend saving Obols for the Purveyour of Curiosities or taking on challenging content such as strongholds or the standard dungeons around Sanctuary. Both methods will lead to some Legendaries, even if there is luck involved.
Each piece of equipment has its own version of the Baleful Fragments within the crafting material pouch. Jewelry will require you to break down other pieces and look for an Abstruse Sigil. For armor, that material is the Coiling Wards, which I have a guide for as well if you are in the market for more Diablo 4 upgrades.
