How to Get Coiling Wards in Diablo 4

Upgrade that armor.

Each equipment type in Diablo 4 requires a rare crafting material once you start to get past the second upgrade level, or you want to change powerful passives. Most equipment categories have one rare crafting material, and for the armor in Diablo 4, that is the Coiling Ward.

Coiling Wards are earned by salvaging Legendary armor that has 400+ power in Diablo 4. Each time you salvage a Legendary armor piece, you get back some of the resources, but it’s the Coiling Ward that is the most important. Once the armor is destroyed, the ward goes into your material bag which doesn’t take up any inventory space.

For any of the equipment in Diablo 4, you will have to sacrifice old armor to make your current armor more powerful. This is what makes finding Legendary equipment exciting, even when you already have all the equipment you need for a build. The grind for rare armor never stops.

When you have the Coiling Wards you need for your character, bring them to a Blacksmith or the Occultist. Whether you want to upgrade your Legendary armor to the fourth tier, or you want to change the Aspect to something more powerful, the wards are required. By the time I hit World Tier 3, I had more than a few wards ready to spend.

There are two great ways to get more Legendary armor pieces in Diablo 4 and both of them involve some luck. I like to take on dungeons in a group or complete as many events as possible to earn Obols. With enough obols, I can head to the Purveyor of Curiosities and roll a decent chance at rare armor. It’s a great way to get more Coiling Wards when you have nothing to destroy.
