The First Berserker: Khazan is one of my favorite releases of 2025 so far, and it’s a fantastic addition to the Soulslike genre. It’s available on current-generation consoles and PC, and built on Unreal Engine 4. The PC port is competent, with support for multiple controllers with proper in-game prompts.

Despite the support, if you still can’t get your controller to work properly, especially PlayStation controllers like the DualSense or Dualshock 4 with The First Berserker Khazan, here is how you can fix that.

Fixing The First Berserker Khazan Controller Issues

I have tested an Xbox Series controller as well as a standard Dualshock 4 in The First Berserker: Khazan, and both work perfectly. However, since these controllers have native profiles set up by the developers, Steam Input can mess up things for PlayStation controllers. To avoid this, you need to disable Steam Input specifically for The First Berserker: Khazan.

Disable Steam Input

Here is how you can disable Steam Input for the game specifically.

  • Make sure The First Berserker: Khazan isn’t running
  • Open Steam, and navigate to your library
  • Here, right-click on The First Berserker: Khazan and select Properties
  • In the Controller tab, select Disable Steam Input under Override for The First Berserker: Khazan

After you’re done, your Dualshock 4 or DualSense will work as intended with The First Berserker Khazan, and you won’t have a problem.

As mentioned, the game also features the correct button prompts if you decide to use a PlayStation controller, though the game has a little trouble switching between different controllers. This means that you shouldn’t swap to an Xbox controller while you’ve started with a PlayStation controller, and vice versa.

Generic Controller Troubleshooting

Outside of Steam Input, there are a few more things you can do to fix any controller issues with The First Berserker Khazan.

  • Double-check if your controller is actually visible to Steam. To check detected controllers currently connected to your PC in the Steam client, select Steam Steam Settings Controller:

  • Connect one controller at a time to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Try a wired connection instead of playing wirelessly.
  • Remove any other active input devices like a HOTAS or racing wheel.

That’s all there is to it, and it’s not really the game’s fault, but Steam Input is interfering with the controller profiles as usual. Even with these minor annoyances, Steam Input is incredibly useful, especially when you’re playing a game with poor controller support. This is why I always recommend disabling it on a per-game basis rather than disabling the feature entirely.
