To catch a fish, you will first need to obtain the Pokey Fishing Rod in Mirthwood. This can only be purchased after you have completed the game’s prologue and reached Mirthwood.

How to get Pokey Fishing Rod

Once you have reached Mirthwood town, you will get a ravaged house, which you can renovate later. Opening the map by pressing the “M” key will not reveal any points of interest for you to hint at how to catch the fish. So, all you need to do is go southeast from your house and reach a windmill with fields nearby.

You will find a stall with seeds and vegetables on its side and a plant icon over it. This is a trading stall where you can buy or sell items. In the list of items of this trading stall, you will find the Pokey Fishing Rod worth 20 coins.

At the start of Mirthwood, you will have decent coins for early purchases. However, if you can not seem to buy the Pokey Fishing Rod, consider gathering resources such as wood, stone, or growing plants on your farm and then sell them for coins.

You can always interact with certain storage spaces, such as small containers or furniture inside houses, and find a “Steal” prompt over them. This will allow you to steal items from others in Mirthwood and then sell them for more coins. However, this action will also decrease your Morality stats.

The next step involves going to a river stream to catch a fish in Mirthwood. Open your map by pressing the “M” key and look for a river passage near your position. Mostly, you will find a river east of the Mirthwood.

Run towards the river and equip the Pokey Fishing Rod, click the “left mouse button” or press “F” and your character will toss the fishing rod’s bait hook in the water. Then follow these steps to catch yourself a fish in Mirthwood:

  • Wait for an exclamation mark to appear near the hook’s spot.
  • Click the “left mouse button” or press “F” as soon as you see the exclamation mark.
  • This will bring up a wheel with a pointer you can control using the mouse and an abruptly moving green marker.
  • You must move the pointer and keep it inside the green marker.
  • A water level will rise inside this circular wheel the longer you keep the pointer inside the green marker.
  • A circle will occasionally appear outside the wheel and converge to its center.
  • As this circle shrinks, it turns from red to green color, indicating the perfect opportunity to press the “F” key or the “Left mouse button” again to reel back the bait and catch the fish.

This outer circle mostly appears two times during the catching sequence, so if you need to successfully catch the fish, maintain the pointer at all times inside the green marker and press the button the moment the converged circle becomes green.

If done right, you will notice the “picked up Perch or Fresh Trout” notification on the left side of the screen. Perch and Trout are various types of fish type in Mirthwood.

On the other hand, if you fail the catching sequence, you can grab random items from the water, such as wood and stone.

What to Do With the Fish in Mirthwood

Your character needs energy to perform tasks such as breaking rocks to get stones, cutting trees for wood, and so on. These tasks consume energy, which can be regained by eating raw or cooked food such as fish.

Catching fish is easier than acquiring other food items. This not only makes fish a good source of regaining lost energy but also an excellent item to sell in the market and easily earn coins in Mirthwood.
