The newly released horror title Layers of Fear from Bloober Team uses a variety of scares to mess with players’ heads, leaving you in a state of second-guessing and anticipating what will happen next. There is no better example of this than a section of the game in which players encounter a room with the words “Don’t Look Back.” Successful navigation of this puzzle earns players a trophy/achievement called Instinct of Self Preservation, while failing results in a quick, frightening death. Here is how to successfully conquer this room and earn the achievement in Layers of Fear.
Instinct of Self-Preservation in Layers of Fear – Explained
In Chapter 5, you will begin an eerie encounter where the silhouette of the wife (AKA the scary lady who has been chasing you around the haunted mansion) will stand in your path with the words “DON’T LOOK BACK” scrawled above the doorway. You have two options at this moment: proceed forward without looking back, or turn around and see what happens. Spoiler alert: failing to heed the warning will result in a scary jumpscare and death, which will lock you out of the trophy/achievement, so make like Boston and “Don’t Look Back” if you want to earn Instinct of Self-Preservation.

Instinct of Self Preservation – Solution
You can’t simply move forward through each room to progress, as you will be stuck in a continuous loop unless you solve the puzzle. In order to escape the loop and earn the achievement, light each candelabra that spawns in the room you have entered, then proceed through the door.
In total, you will need to light four sets of candles to dispel the apparition and progress in the story. Just make sure that you never turn around.
Once you have lit the final candles, you will only need to proceed through the door once more in order to obtain the achievement.
Once you have successfully escaped the loop without looking back, you will receive the Instinct of self-preservation bronze PlayStation trophy or Xbox achievement worth 30 Gamerscore.
