How to Cure Frostbite in Escape from Tarkov

Finally, a use for Vodka.

There’s a new debuff hitting players in the limited-time Christmas event in Escape from Tarkov. Frostbite, and it will stick around for a while, especially since many events and quests revolve around these mechanics. Players must know how this new mechanic works because it can derail your raid by putting you at an extreme disadvantage. Here’s how the Frostbite debuff works and how to cure it in Escape from Tarkov.

How to Remove Frostbite in Escape from Tarkov

There are several ways to remove Frostbite. The most common way to get rid of Frostbite is to go inside a shelter or near a fire barrel (or any fire source). Since the game is not in a “perfect” state, going inside the shelter may or may not remove the Frostbite debuff, but it really should remove it. If not, you are going to have to play through it.

As for the fire sources, going near one will remove the Frostbite effect, but moving away from it will slowly bring it back. You should stick to these fire sources just to regenerate your stamina. It is also worth noting that physically touching the fire will burn your character, and if you are not careful, you might die in a few seconds because of it.

Bring drinks like Vodka or Whiskey if you want to be prepared for the Frostbite debuff. Drinking alcohol will warm your body up and remove the Frostbite for the whole duration of the alcohol buffs/debuffs.

As a piece of useful advice, you can stop at all the Christmas Tree locations because they have a high chance of dropping Vodka and Whiskey, among other Christmas-themed items.

How Does Frostbite Work in Escape from Tarkov?

Frostbite is a debuff that can affect players when in a raid. Players can only get affected by Frostbite when there is a snowstorm. This may look confusing because the whole map is already covered in snow, and you might also see snow falling to the ground. However, the whistling sound and enormous fog are the biggest signs of an ongoing snowstorm. Going outside will immediately put the Frostbite debuff on you if you can hear and see these.

The Frostbite status effect reduces the player’s maximum stamina and stamina regeneration rate, practically immobilizing players. Your peripheral vision is also blurred on the sides but still manageable.

Since it is also easy to see players because everything is white and covered in snow, getting spotted in the open with a Frostbite status effect is basically a death wish. You are unable to sprint, making you an easy target, and your only choice is to find and eliminate the target who is shooting you, which, at this point, is already a futile attempt.

So, the best way to avoid death is to avoid the open areas when you have the Frostbite status effect or drink any alcoholic beverages when you are about to cross an open area. Snowstorms usually last for a minute or two, so they are relatively fast. You can go inside a shelter and loot a few items to wait out the snowstorm.

You cannot die from the Frostbite status effect.

How to Finish Chilly in Escape from Tarkov

Early in the wipe, you’ll also encounter a quest or task called Chilly, which revolves around the Frostbite status effect. The quest is from Jaeger, meaning you must finish the Introduction questline to unlock him first.

Once you have the Chilly task, you must eliminate any 10 targets while under the effect of Frostbite. While you can do this task on any map, the best way to finish it is on Woods or Factory.

In Woods, you will almost always have Frostbite because the whole map is essentially an open area. If there is a snowstorm, you get Frostbite immediately unless you have some alcoholic beverages. You can run around the Sawmill area and focus on eliminating Scavs for your 10 targets. You can even stay inside the small cabins in Sawmill and wait for the snowstorm, then eliminate all the targets.

As for Factory, it is a PvP map. If there’s a snowstorm, you can eliminate all targets in the area if you are not inside a shelter (office). However, the trick is to find a safe spot and wait for the snowstorm. Once the snowstorm hits, there are so many Scavs in Factory after the first 3-7 minutes of the raid. You’ll surely find more than 10 targets in just one snowstorm, making the quest relatively easy to finish.
