Prices can get hefty for pirates who haven’t been looting enough though, and expanding your new ship collection goes beyond Gold alone. Captaincy is open to everyone, but it’s not free of time or Gold, and this guide will outline exactly how to get your own ship and name it in Sea of Thieves.

How to Buy a Ship and Change the Name in Sea of Thieves Season 7

The option to buy a ship and earn Captaincy in Sea of Thieves is the easiest part of the process. When you log in to the game, you are always greeted with a menu and the Adventure selection. Then you must choose the size of the ship you want for the session. In that same menu of ships, a new option that is labeled “My Ships” will be available to everyone. Select this option to choose the ship you want to buy.

Just like the base game, there are three ships you can purchase in Sea of Thieves. They are based on crew size from two to four pirates in total, and as expected, the larger the ship, the more Gold you will need. At this point, you either have the funds to get the ship you want, or you’ll have to wait on Captaincy. Below are each of the purchasable ships and their cost:

  • Sloop (2 players) – 250,000 Gold
  • Brigantine (3 players) – 375,000 Gold
  • Galleon (4 players) – 500,000

Once you have enough gold for the ship you want, simply choose the menu for purchasing a vessel and lock in the crew size you want. Now you’ve achieved Captaincy and you are the sole owner of your ship, even if others are playing alongside you. Not only do you have a newfound title, but you also can name the ship itself. When you choose the ship you want to purchase, you’ll have to pick a name on the spot for free. If you want to change the name in the future, that’s going to require 499 Ancient Coins at the Pirate Emporium.

Eventually, you might get bored of a single ship in Sea of Thieves. The good news is you can purchase the other two ship sizes that you’re missing and add them to the ship collection. These can also be customized with help from the Shipwrights just like the first one. However, if you want two of the same ship, you have to earn a Legendary Title for the initial ship you bought. It’ll take some time, but with enough voyages completed, the title will come along.

And that’s all there is to know about purchasing new ships as a Captain. For more tips, guides, and updates, head over to our dedicated Sea of Thieves section!
