How to Break Yurgir’s Contract in Baldur’s Gate 3

Yurgir reminds me of a red Shrek.

Yurgir makes a big deal about how impossible his contract is. And while it’s certainly kept him trapped in the Gauntlet of Shar for quite some time, it’s far from unbreakable. Here’s how to nullify and destroy Yurgir’s contract in the Gauntlet of Shar in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How To Free Yurgir from His Contract in the Gauntlet of Shar in Baldur’s Gate 3

Yurgir isn’t exactly a sympathetic figure. He’s a fiend who essentially committed mass murder in the Gauntlet of Shar, leading it to its current state.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t help the man out. Especially if it means we can skip out on a boss fight. However, Astarion won’t be happy about your decision.

You don’t have to go far to break Yurgir free from his contract. Approach the broken end of the corridor near the Displacer’s nest and the patrolling Merregon.

Once there, leap down using the broken stone just below the edge. Then jump across the chasm.

You’ll find a craggy rock you can then descend. Doing so will lead you to a platform full of bones. To the north side of this platform will be another craggy edge, which you should descend again.

This will put you at the feet of the giant statue of Shar. Go to the back, near her ankles, to find a ritual circle. Light each of the candles, then click on the Broken Effigy. Doing so will spawn a rat.

Make sure you can Speak to Animals. This will allow you to make the choice to accept the rat’s treasure or at least find out more about its lore. If that sounds like too much of a bother, the background of the rats is this.

Raphael saved the last Justiciar by turning him into dozens of rats. Raphael did this to keep Yurgir trapped in the Gauntlet of Shar. Because he’s a terrible person and he didn’t want Yurgir to fulfill his end of the bargain.

If you attack the rat, you’ll initially only fight one. But once you kill the first one, a dozen more will spawn. And once you kill a few more of those rats, a dozen new rats will spawn.

In total, expect to fight around 25 – 30 rats. They’re all low level with the HP to match, but they can deal some significant damage since there are so many of them. Area of effect attacks, like Arms of Hadar, Fireball, or Shadowheart’s Spirit Guardian, are thus very powerful.

Once all the smaller rats are killed, they’ll reveal themselves to be Lyrthindor, the last Justiciar. You’ll then have to kill him, too. But if you’re apologetic about it, you’ll get approval from Shadowheart.

Lyrthindor has a base HP of 128, but since you’ve already done some significant damage to his rat bodies, he’ll only have around 70 HP. Finish him off, and you can loot the Justiciar’s Scimitar and Justiciar’s Great shield from him.

Next, report to Yurgir to let him know the good news. Doing so will bring Raphael down to join the conversation, and Yurgir will immediately accept a new contract because I guess some people never learn.

Yurgir will then give you his blessing to loot whatever’s left and then teleport away. He’ll also leave the last Umbral Gem right where he was standing. The only chest in the area is to the left of his bed of corpses. Within is 248 gold and the Boots of Brilliance.

And with that done, you can finally seek out the Nightsong.
