How Many Heroes Are in Overwatch 2?

As of writing, there are 36 heroes each split into one of three roles. This breaks down to 11 tanks, 17 damage, and eight support characters. With that, you may be wondering why the damage character amount is so high, and that’s because, in the earliest days of Overwatch 1, damage was split into Attack and Defense characters. Given how confusing that made things, this was later scrapped in favor of a shared damage role. Here are all heroes broken down by whatever role they fill:

  • Tank Characters
    • D.va
    • Doomfist
    • Junker Queen
    • Orisa
    • Ramattra
    • Reinhardt
    • Roadhog
    • Sigma
    • Winston
    • Wrecking Ball
    • Zarya
  • Damage Characters
    • Ashe
    • Bastion
    • Cassidy (previously McCree)
    • Echo
    • Genji
    • Hanzo
    • Junkrat
    • Mei
    • Pharah
    • Reaper
    • Sojourn
    • Soldier: 76
    • Sombra
    • Symmetra
    • Torbjorn
    • Tracer
    • Widowmaker
  • Support Characters
    • Ana
    • Baptiste
    • Brigitte
    • Kiriko
    • Lucio
    • Mercy
    • Moira
    • Zenyatta

Across all 36 heroes, all of them provide a different playstyle from one another. This improves replayability, even at its closest with both Sojourn and Soldier: 76 providing very similar playstyles but requiring much different skills from the player. As far as future characters go, the team will be releasing tanks and healers exclusively in 2023, with a more balanced approach beginning in 2024. Needless to say, you should have plenty of heroes (and maps) to play on.
