How Long Has Hogwarts Legacy Been in Development?
Looking at some surface-level information, we know that the official Hogwarts Legacy YouTube channel unveiled a first look at the game on September 16, 2020, through an official reveal trailer. This was paired with a PlayStation blog post, giving us more details regarding Hogwarts Legacy and its initial features. However, after digging further, the history dates all the way back to 2017.

An announcement from Wizarding World in November 2017 revealed that Warner Bros. created a new label, Portkey Games, to begin releasing Harry Potter games. Avalanche Software was acquired earlier in the same year, marking the second part of the beginning of Hogwarts Legacy’s development. The internet later discovered leaks in 2018 for the game now known as Hogwarts Legacy, but they weren’t widely known or discussed.
With this in mind, though, Hogwarts Legacy has likely been in development since 2018, with most public information launching between 2020 and 2023.
