How Big is the Map in Below the Stone? – Answered

Below the Stone is the first game of Strollart Studios, and your task is to simply… mine! The underworld is vast, and we’ll tell you how big the map is and how many different biomes there are to be explored in this Below the Stone.

What is the Map Size and Number of Biomes in Below the Stone?

The map size in Below the Stone is 1024×1024, which equals 1,048,576 different blocks. You start at the 0,0 coordinates, and the limits are -511,-511 in one corner, and 512,512 in the other. It may feel overwhelming initially, but after playing the game for a while, I can tell you I feel it’s tuned just fine, especially considering the promised improvements for the future versions of the game.

List of All Biomes in Below the Stone

The biome list you will see below is not final. It’s just the list of Biomes I’ve found by the time I started writing this article. Of course, it will get updated with the game as time passes. I’ve placed them in no particular order.

Stone biome

One of the starting biomes in Layer 2. There are stones all over the place!

Dirt / Soil biome

One of the starting biomes in Layer 1.

Stalagmites biome

You will recognize this biome when you see stalagmite formations around you.

Slime biome

This biome is colored in the Lime/Shamrock shade of green (the Slime Lime, hehe). It’s so intensely colored, you won’t be able to miss it!

Geode biome

When you see pine-shaped stones coming out of the floor, you know you’ve reached Geode Biome. If you are up for medusa hunting, you should check out this purple-colored biome.

Magma / Lava biome

Careful, the floor is lava! But no, it won’t hurt you. So we just play pretend.

Spider Den biome

Eek, spiders! You will recognize it by the spider webs and spiders hanging about. I don’t want to instill fear into arachnophobic people with a screenshot of the area.

Swamp biome

The dark green color of the tiles and the swampy surroundings indicate you are in the swamp biome. Dark Green slimes dwell in this biome.

Mica biome

You will recognize the Mica biome by the rock formation of the ore blocks:

Glow Crystals Biome

Walls look similar to the Mica Biome, but all around you are glowing teal-colored stones and orange table-shaped mushrooms.

Frozen biome

The Frozen biome is recognized by its snowy color. The enemies in here are not very dangerous. There’s one loud snowball-encased troll that’ll announce its presence by groaning and laughing

Radiation / Salt biome

The most dangerous enemies, in my opinion, the Scorpions, occupy these areas. Their attacks are swift, and they move way too fast. If you do not see them first, you’ll see limestones sticking out; be on your guard.

Desert Biome

It’s a desert—nothing special to talk about this.

There are a couple of undiscovered/undeveloped biomes which will be added in the future to this list as soon as any information on them surfaces:

• Bioluminescent biome
• Shale biome
• Corrupted biome
• Basalt biome

List of Dungeons / Compounds in Below the Stone

You will find quite a few enclosed settlements within Below the Stone. So far, I’ve found:

• Skeleton Dungeon – You will recognize it by a skull that lights up and summons skeletons from pentagrams on the floor. Use your pickaxe to bash that skull and prevent further summons.
• Kobold Settlement – You will recognize it when you see Kobold tents and big tiles on the floor. Use your weapon to destroy the tent or else it will indefinitely spawn new Kobolds.
• Regular Compound / Dungeon – It’s something like an underground city, with a lot of boxes and chests scattered around, where you will find all sorts of enemies, even the boss (Cave Troll). They should be very rich with loot. If you want to open a red chest, you’ll need a Golden key.

How to Get to Layer 2 in Below the Stone

You can reach Layer 2 in Below the Stone by finding a hole leading to Layer 2 or slaying a Cave Troll (boss) that drops an item that offers you a teleport to Layer 2. At this point in time, these holes are located around the edges of the “world” at the end of a hallway. Once you jump in, there’s no going back to Layer 1. I advise you to complete at least one of your quests before jumping in so that you can have a get-out-of-jail card when you get overwhelmed in Layer 2.
